The Ol' Fake Chimney-to-Rob-Bank Ploy

2009_02_chimney.jpg Wow: The Post reports, "Thieves hid behind a fake chimney to cut a hole in the roof of a Brooklyn bank - then made off with the contents of 60 safe-deposit boxes." The Astoria Federal Saving bank on East 2nd Street and 18th Avenue was robbed by burglars who used "heavy-duty blowtorches normally used under water to slice through the roof" and break into the building. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the thieves going to the roof of a neighboring building to reach the bank and setting up the fake chimney (!!). The bank said it wasn't clear whether customers would be reimbursed— one anguished customer said, "I purposely use the bank because it's supposed to be safer than my house."

Damn they had some skills to steal from an Bank underneath the Hudson river. Thats a pretty good place to put a vault, you'd think nobody will realize its there.

it's in brooklyn. nyc is not just manhattan.

This is pretty impressive. I think they earnt the money.

The bank said it wasn't clear whether customers would be reimbursed.

That's right, folks. FDIC doesn't have enough dough to cover it all.

"That's right, folks. FDIC doesn't have enough dough to cover it all."

FDIC doesn't insure the contents of safe deposit boxes. Really the only reason the bank could be required to reimburse customers would be if the bank were found to be negligent. Not likely, but one possibility for some people is that some homeowner/renter insurance policies do cover bank safe deposits.

Yea, I live around this bank and I was appalled when I heard this. They were renovating the bank so I think that that's why the bank became susceptible to robbery.

I also heard that they were trying to break into the Chase bank across the street too.

Forget Astoria for Life. They stole so much of my relatives money. They took over $300,000 of valuables and are not covered for anything. All they can say im sorry. These people are left pretty much in the street now and dont have a penny under their name now to pay their bills. I have no words. You dont leave money at home because your afraid someone might steal it, but if you can't trust your money in the bank, then where can you trust to leave your money?

Astoria Federal is the WORST. My husband used to bank there, he had identity theft problems on several occasions, and when it came to simple things like getting a new ATM card, it would take WEEKS rather than minutes, which is how long these things take at other banks. Finally he switched banks because he was tired of their horrible customer service, lack of locations, ATM fees, lack of security, etc.
