The Rangers have brought in the antithesis of Tom Renney as their next coach and that may be a very good thing. Technically, the hiring of John Tortorella is a re-hiring since Tortorella stood behind the Blueshirt bench for four games at the end of the 1999-2000 season, but Tortorella comes back to the organization with a much better resume than when he left. He took the Tampa Bay Lightning from the cellar to the penthouse, winning the Stanley Cup in 2004. He is a hard-ass coach, demanding accountability from his players and does not put up with excuses. It will be very interesting to see how Tortorella mixes with some of the disappointing veterans on this club and if he can help Nikolai Zherdev to finally become a complete player.

Good choice. This collection of passionless underachievers needs Torts.
Zherdev is a poor man's Kovalev. We'll see greatness in flashes and be frustrated the rest of the time, no matter who is coaching.
The Zherdev-Kovalev comparison is right on point. Both players had ridiculous talent, but both are capable of going a month without scoring a goal. Kovalev only lived up to his potential when he played with Mario Lemieux in Pittsburgh. Needless to say, we don't have anybody close to Super Mario...
Opinion: Tortorella is such a douche.
Fact: Tortorella is a douche.
False: The Rangers will improve this season.
They may not improve, and he may be a douche.
I still like the choice. The "friend of the players" approach only works when you have players who don't need the extra motivation. It's clear that this collection of players needs to be motivated and disciplined. They need to know they will lose their place in the lineup if they don't perform, regardless of how much money they make. Torts is not afraid to sit underperfomers.
A hardass only goes so far. You can't squeeze blood from a stone, and you can't turn a mediocre group of players into great ones by benching them. This group of players doesn't need to be motivated, it needs to be improved.
I don't think this is a mediocre group of players. they are definitely mismatched and don't have any chemistry. Perhaps a kick in the arse will do them some good.
I agree that Tortorella's style will only get them so far. Unfortunately, there aren't many other options. Sather has saddled the team with contracts they won't be able to get rid of.
i love tortorella!!! he's a great fit...
