Those Protesters Sean Penn Was Referring To

2009_02_laprot.jpg When giving his Best Actor acceptance speech, Sean Penn said, "For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support." LAist has photographs of the protesters, who are from Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas; one said, "I'm picketing the Oscars because the entertainment industry in this country is just ...one of the institutions, that you're using to promote sin and filth and rebellion against the commandments and standards of God." And Penn later said backstage, "I think that these are largely taught limitations and ignorances. It's very sad in a way, because it's a demonstration of such emotional cowardice to be so afraid to be extending the same rights to a fellow man as you would want for yourself."

And Kansas represents the best that America has to offer? It's friggin' Kansas!

Too bad Penn had to give legitimacy to Westboro Baptist Church. If you've ever seen any of these people, you know that they are beyond crazy. Still our Founding Fathers gave them the right to freedom of speech just as much as they gave hatemongers like Jeremiah Wright and Al Sharpton.

They had a member defending her "Thank God for dead soldiers" posters a couple of years ago, right? Or was that another group protesting at military memorial services?

Yeah, that was them. Fortunately there are groups of people (Vets at military funerals, for example) who block them from view and drown them out vocally so that the grieving families don't have to see/hear them.

Yes, the funeral demonstrations are completely vulgar. I hope they had to skip a military funeral in order to make an appearance outside the Academy Awards.

It's unfortunate that vets (and others) have to be at funerals to keep them at bay, but I'm glad the military "family" is there to step in.

why do they use the US flag as a skirt?
I bet they were yelling U S A! U S A!
what are they angry at and why, for chrissakes you're white. you're not the victim.

its so funny that these people are so powerless

Oh, I so knew it would be Fred Phelps et al when Penn brought that up. Too bad about the free publicity this time; Penn's clearly not up on how to deal with trolls.

Exactly. Phelps and his clan are just a thug-cult. They represent nothing. They're not even a joke.

Where is an emotionally disturbed chimp when you need one.

I think Penn knew what he was doing. By mentioning the protest outside, it was like he was equating anybody who voted for Prop 8 with the crazy Phelps family who nobody wants to be associated with.

you ever see the phelps clan on louis theroux? The kids seem very smart. It's sad that the parents teach them to hate. Fast fact. Fred Phelps actually was a proponent for black civil rights.

I'd like to see what would happen if the WBC nutters tried to protest some hasidim event. I suspect it would be mighty entertaining.

Not that it makes it any better, but these protesters are there for EVERY major Hollywood awards ceremony (whether or not they're actually from Westboro Baptist). I used to go to the Emmy's & would see them every time-- they line the limo route behind the theater. People are fucking ignorant & crazy.

And the right to marry is found where?

I may be dumb, but I think you need a license, like driving.

I will give Marxy Penn an education...everyone say it with me....If you need a license, its not a right.

I would like to point out that these people, dumb as they are, represent the majority of Californians and the US as a whole.

They agree with the majority of Americans on one issue: no to gay marriage. Please don't confuse sharing the same opinion on one topic with sharing the same opinion on all topics.

Well, you got one thing right. You are dumb. Please have at least a passing familiarity with our legal system before you try to make legal arguments.

(you need a license for a gun.. you gonna argue that's not a right, too?)

God Hates America and Heath In Hell? For real?

Sometimes I wonder if these nutcrackers are really who they say they are or if they are imposters posing as the fanatical righteous nuts in order to discredit them.

I think these crazies are really atheists posing as Christian do-gooders and moralists so that normal people will hate Christians and turn atheist.

Or, you could come to terms with the fact that Christianity, like other religions, is a childish set of beliefs that create unthinking, hateful people who spend their lives working to marginalize people who don't believe as they do. In fact, you know what, Snickerdoodle? I'm pretty sick of believers putting all the world's evils at the feet of non believers - to the point of crediting us with religious-based hate as well. Read a book other than those written thousands of years ago, you ignorant, servile ass.

Dear Wordsniper, thank you for saying what needed to be said there.

These are the same wingnuts that protest the funerals of American soldiers and who stood outside Matthew Shepard's Funeral clapping and saying that he got what he deserved.
There is surely a special place hell for these people.
I mean, if you believe in that sort of thing.

theses are impostors, those signs make no sense. The oscar suck so much that this fake protest was the best part of the entertainment.

I would like to point out that these people, dumb as they are, represent the majority of Californians and the US as a whole. Sean Penn is the villiage idiot for giving them more publicity. I will also point out that marriage is a RELIGIOUS cerimony. If your Gay and dont believe in God and God has a bible on Earth, where we live, that says "Gay is an abomonation". Why do Gays want to be married?

I noticed that Sean Penn didnt donate ONE RED AMERICAN CENT to the "no on prop 8" campaign (go ahead, check the website), just run his mouth. Smoke that in your milliondollar pipe.

@ #17: "I will also point out that marriage is a RELIGIOUS cerimony" -

Really? Where's the religious official in City Hall? Also, there's no "i" in ceremony. Please stop writing in a public forum, you are embarrassing yourself. Have you ever had a thought that wasn't hand-fed to you, which you then parrot out verbatim?

Oops, didn't mean to reply to #24 - just post a comment. Guess that takes a little steam out of my typo gotcha, but my point stands.

If marriage is a religious ceremony, why can it be performed in a city hall by a judge? There are legal matters that go along with marriage, and that is what is being addressed.

Hey look at the bright side: at least these yokels didn't take any livestock with them wherever they go.

Is it just me, or did they put a picture of the wrong Brokeback cowboy on the "Heath in Hell" sign?

Yep, that's Jake on the poster.

If only their van would collide head-on with a PETA van. Pray for rain slick roads outside a wake for police dogs that served in Iraq.

Yes Sean best Friend is Fidel and we all know how gays are treated in
Cuba.

there were lots of boobs uncoverage but the boobs of the feminist ninjas were way better.

I was wondering if it was Phelps that Sean Penn was talking about; I thought they were in Buffalo to protest at a funeral for someone who died in the plane crash there.

They don't even matter, and they only represent themselves. They have no influence on anything, except maybe to make other homophobes think "I don't want to look like THAT!"

HOW do they have the cash to fly all over the place, that's what I wonder.

According to wikipedia, they get money from lawsuits from being incorrectly arrested, etc.

Hey Politburo...I went to school in the South...anyone can walk into a Wal Mart and buy a shotgun or rifle, which I promise, will kill you.

So...NO...you dont need a license to buy a gun.
