The financial firms may be doing poorly on Wall Street, but there's a baby boom in the Financial District! The NY Times dubs the area the "Diaper District" and speaks to doormen at condo 80 John Street who say 22 babies were born to residents last year—"And we have about two or maybe three more expecting. There were so many, we lost count"—as well as parents who explain the migration—"A lot of people that I know from the group lived in rentals in TriBeCa and Battery Park City, and when it came time to buy, they couldn’t afford to stay where they were, but the Financial District offered more space for less money." Services for families are emerging, like preschools, more diapers at stores, children's clothing stores, though some residents still want more retail and restaurant options. Hey, this might be a great idea for laid-off investment bankers—developing services to cater to the families downtown...they know the neighborhood, after all! And one mom approved of neighborhood, "It’s a weird mix of baby carriages and people rushing to the rat race, but it works.”

Well, if there's nothing better to do... people must get on it!
I hear it can be a very successful stress-release activity.
This is not only happening there but I imagine in many section s of Manhattan. I live in a midtown sliver high-rise and moved into the building in 1987. At that time there was only one child in the building, she was about 3 years old at the time (she still lives here). We must have about 25 children born to residents in the last 6 or 7 years. What happens, after a while, and after a 2nd child, is that they head for the burbs. Preschool costs can be much as an Ivy League college and the 2 bedroom apartments that they live in now become too small. The larger apartments, especially in the more familial neighborhoods are prohibitive to many. The primary schools in parts of the city are ok or better but when it's time for middle school they've got a problem. If the second child is of the opposite sex, they know that at one point they will need that 3rd bedroom. Those are the turning points in their lives. The problem now, is the economy and many of the new parents are trapped.
what? people fuck? no way! and from said fucking comes babies? these babies won't be enough to pay my social security sadly.
I guess all these ex-Wall Streeters now have a lot of time on their hands....
OMG...now they're fucking each other.
