Making The Call: February Stinks for Sports

It’s almost over. Next Sunday we will turn the calendar over to March and say goodbye to February. The month started with the Super Bowl, but once that's over things get really bad. Nobody watches the Pro Bowl and the NBA All-Star Game isn’t much better. Hockey and basketball all there throughout the month, but the games are more monotonous at this point. The excitement of those seasons has waned and the playoff races haven’t really started up yet.

Tennis and golf do not offer any relief as they are holding tournaments, but none of their majors. The day that pitchers and catchers report is certainly exciting to the baseball fan, but that excitement quickly fades as you realize that actual games are still a ways off. Some will say college basketball adds excitement to February, but college basketball is really all about March.

This February we have had to suffer through the usual lack of sports excitement with a heaping dose of A-Rod and steroids making things worse than usual. But, March is just around the corner and with that we will have lots of real sports to distract us.

What a load of horseshit —this area has three hockey teams and two basketball teams to follow in February. On any given night you can tune in and watch a game. Why does every freaking game need to have some sort of major impact? Sports around here truly sucks in July when baseball is all that is on. Nothing more tedious and monotonous than four pitching changes in the 7th inning...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    What a worthless post.

I'd have to disagree. NASCAR season begins in February.

    Do it again 48!

  • You know its bad when NBC, CBS and Fox were all showing infomercials at noon on Sunday.

At least ABC had "Like it Is".

Just the sight of so many baseballs in one image gets me excited. Nothing can suck this close to opening day. Plus, March Madness is so close! Sometimes it's best to let the anticipation build.

i'd watch a whole lot more football (soccer) if they had announcers that didn't speak in weird regional British accents on every other channel. It's just too much culture shock to go from liverpool english and then manchester, etc.. It feels like I'm watching something foreign instead of universal. If they had a dedicated US announcer it might make it better.

With all due respect, football (not throwball) is raging.

The premiership in England saw Chelsea implod, La Liga in Spain has barcelona providing great skills and style, Serie A in Italy continues with Mourinho coaching Internazionale Milan into a 7 point lead, over in France, Olympique Lyonnais with SEVEN consecutive titles finally looking vulnerable (sort of)...

And Lindsey Vonn is kicking ass in the World Ski Tour.

    my 2 cents

    Football (STOP CALLING IT SOCCER)

What a valuable post. Some guy doesn't appreciate hockey or basketball. What would I do without gothamist?

I have to disagree about March being boring for Basketball and Hockey. The battle for the final spots of the playoffs are raging. And for hockey, the trade deadline means some interesting roster changes.
