Criminal Probe Continues in CT Chimp Mauling

The Connecticut woman severely injured by her friend's pet chimpanzee remains in critical condition. Charla Nash, 50, was transported to the Cleveland Clinic, which had performed a successful face transplant last December. However, it's unclear whether Nash is a good candidate for a transplant—a doctor at a different hospital told the Cleveland Plain Dealer, "Some of the traditional reconstructive techniques might not work well for this patient."

Medics who first responded to Nash, who had been trying to help friend Sondra Herold calm down her 200-pound pet chimp Travis, described her injuries to the AP. Paramedic Bill Ackley said, "It was amazing to us she had these type of injuries and they were survivable," and added, "I would liken it to a machine-type accident. She had some crushing injuries to her hands and some tearing injuries to her hands." Nash's eyes were injured and hair was ripped out; her nose "was still there. There was disfigurement. She did have injuries to her mouth that caused quite a bit of bleeding. It was very difficult to determine where everything was because of the blood."

Travis the chimp was killed by police, after Herold's attempts to stop him (she stabbed him and used a shovel to beat him) failed. According to the Stamford Advocate, "Stamford police say they are taking their time before deciding whether" Herold will face criminal charges. Herold was granted permission by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to keep the chimp, which lived with the widower on her estate. While Nash's lawyer declined to comment about whether her family would file a lawsuit, Fordham University Law Professor Jim Cohen believed a lawsuit would be successful, "She was on notice that this chimpanzee was, over the course of time, getting crankier and crankier"—an old neighbor of Herold's says Travis bit her in 1996— "getting less controllable, and she didn't do anything about."

This poor chimp should have been in its natural habitat, and with other chimps. Its owner should be prosecuted for animal cruelty. She had no business keeping a chimp as a pet - and even worse, giving the chimp alcohol and xanax. That is animal cruelty and should be prosecuted as such. It is the owner's fault that the poor chimp is now dead. Terribly sad.

Agree! with other chimps...the little problem those few left chimps are getting hunted for the genitals and hands to be cooked in penis enlargement potions for the moron men.

How about prosecuting people who do things to other people that make what this chimp did to this poor lady look like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park?

Specifically, GW BuSh, Dickwad Cheney and Ronald McRumsfeld?

Idiots.

That chimp would get killed as quick as as a queer in a penitentury or high school football team if he was placed with natural free wild chimps.

Just curious. Have you any sympathy for the innocent human victim? I don't see any.

the facts, really?...
have you heard of something called "zero sum logic"?
Advocating for animal rights doesn't go automatically against human rights AT ALL!
Expressing concern for this chimp doesn't exclude any compassion for the victim. Those two situations are not mutually exclusive. If something from this case we can attribute a huge lack of responsibility from the human handler. Besides animals are not RESPONSIBLE for their acts since human don't attribute any awareness (will) to them.

The poster expressed concern for the chimp, and absolutely NO sympathy for the innocent human who was assaulted by the chimp.

So, I am still waiting for any expression of sympathy for the human, instead of the typical pedantic knee-jerk response from you or that other nut case who always comments on PETA topics on Gothamist.

But, as many have observed, most humans who are obsessed with the suffering of animals show little concern for the suffering of humans. You are a case in point. Instead of showing sympathy for the poor women, you continue your man-hating and people-hating screeds.

If animals are not aware, then all logic of animals rights is a sham. I sure could use some organic chimp meat in the butcher section at Whole Foods tomorrow.

You always make the same stupid comment. Caring for animals does not mean not caring for humans. there are NO degrees of compassion. In FACT, most people that abuses animals abuse people as well. People who abuse animals also discriminate. Either you have compassion or not.

correct me if i'm wrong but, didn't the owner call the friend to help her with the chimp? The chimp was trying to escape, no wonder he got crazy.

even conan obrien let abe vigoda back into the wild. this lady should have done the same for the chimp.

That monkey would get beaten then eaten by the other chimps for being the wrong race (human behaviour, and speaks human, doesn't speak chimp).

I feel sorry for the chimp. Can you imagine sleeping in bed with her, let alone taking a bath and being exposed to her naked bod?

I wish the best for poor Charla. A horrible horrible incident.

Don't be so hard on the poor woman - she's clearly related to the monkey.

Good point Wiseman. I never looked at the similar hair color until you pointed it out.

Oops, I forgot. Also the stature and body weight as well as the overall aura of the two.

I wish GW Bush got mauled by a crazy chimp. Heck I think GW Bush IS a crazy chimp.

Amazing....Bush had chimps compared to him all the time due to facial expressions and nobody complained at all. Now that there was a cartoon in the NY Post and The Chosen One is Prez everyone is up in arms. It makes you realize who the real racists in this Country are.

As for you "past taliban"...your comment, the fact that you use taliban in your name and the fact you have another terrorist as your icon says enough about you.

To be a facial transplant candidate, Nash would at the very least have to be stable and mending well. At this stage they are waiting out infection and reconnecting blood vessels and nerve tissue. It sounds like they might have something to work with in both hands but she has to pull through before any fancy facial reconstruction. If that occurs, I'd recommend Herold as a donor if the blood types match: she no longer has any use for her face as there isn't anyone who'd want to look at her now.

I heard from a patient at Stamford Hospital that the staff are hoping she will die because the injuries are so bad.
...There was a guy mauled by two chimps in 2005 at an animal sanctuary, they bit off his nose, lips, ears, fingers, genitals, and gouged out his eye! He was there to visit his pet chimp that had outgrown it's home. I think his pet chimp watched in horror from another cage when the two chimps jumped him.

There's a very disturbing sexual undertone to this woman's history with the chimp.

perhaps the sexual undertone is as disturbing as her blurring affection with recklessness, if Humans are supposed to be in charge of the brain why would they ignore the behavioral problems of the chimp and feed him booze and Prozac...come fkn on. Put the responsibility where the brains are!

Who wouldn't go beserk if forced to wear that horrid yellow sweater?

Who's the dude in yellow shirt there? Is that Obama?

Did she really give the ape Xanax? I thought he would not drink the tea she put the drug in. Either way she must have given it to him before to calm him down. Human drugs randomly given to a chimp; really smart.

I'll bet her house smells wonderful too.
