THEATER: The current production of Ibsen's famous 1879 play A Doll's House employs an inspired casting twist: all the female roles are performed by exceptionally tall woman, while the male parts are played by actors ranging in height from 40 to 53 inches. Mabou Mines DollHouse was a hit when it first premiered at St. Ann's Warehouse in 2003; after touring the world it's back in Brooklyn for a very limited run. Reviewing it when it premiered, The Times called it "a passionate allegory that works—and plays—on many levels. The men embody small-minded convention and stunted possibilities. The women's big forms exude trapped energy, but they also remind us of the outsize roles that women played in the Victorian imagination." — John Del Signore

THEATER: Eugene Ionesco's hugely influential absurdist play The Bald Soprano skewers the bourgeoisie by turning banal suburban chit chat inside out, revealing the nonsense within. In the right hands, it's electrifying, and Martin Denton at nytheatre.com says a new revival by One Year Lease is "crisp, smart, and elegant. The play reduces fatuous, passive rituals to an exaggerated and bleak view of their essentials, exposing a sad inertia that reveals quite a lot about human nature (such as what was on Ionesco's mind in 1950 when he wrote this, which was how to explain how the banal evil of fascism could ever take hold in a so-called civilized society)." — John Del Signore

Sunday // 3 p.m. // Teatro Circulo [64 E 4th St] // $18
