R.I.P. Shea Stadium

Seems like just yesterday that Billy Joel was planning the ultimate farewell to Shea Stadium, and now, less than two months before baseball season starts up again, Shea is gone. Get some Kleenex Mets fans (you should be used to carrying them around) and take one last look at your team's old home as it gets reduced to rubble, like so many Pennant dreams. Time of death (as recorded by the NY Times): Wednesday, February 18th, 11:21 a.m.

    That's how GDP is created.

"We built a new stadium, we created 100 jobs balalala.."

But, wait, what's the change? Just the location moved 100 yards east?

  • mocanlagunas

can somebody please explain me why we needed 2 new stadiums?

And I don't think it's a beautiful stadium... what century was it designed?

  • jackdonaghy

It was purposely designed to look like the beloved Ebbets Field that was built early in the twentith century and used to stand in Brooklyn.

We got two stadiums because the Yankees got a little jealous of the Mets and the City was being generous at the time.

    Speaking of RIP:

RIP Future Taliban who was banned for speaking the truth and reminding you torturing American War Criminals that you're despicable homicidal maniacs.

    Oh, and oil thieves too.

  • fakenewyorker

it's great that the mets will finally be moving to a stadium with a name not associated with failure.

  • jackdonaghy

You realize that Citibank is the main sponsor of the new digs, right? They're not exactly a symbol of prosperity.

  • drewmaster

I believe he was being sarcastic...

  • fugothamist

  • NannyState
