Earlier this morning reports came in of a "fatal jumper down" at East 89th Street and Park Avenue. Disturbingly, news soon followed that it was a child who jumped or fell from the roof of a school (the Post is reporting it was from an 11th floor window). Now WCBS sheds some more light on the incident, noting the deceased is a 17-year-old male who was found DOA outside of UES's Dalton School (a co-ed private school with about 1,300 students attending). No specifics as to how the fall happened have been reported, but ABC notes that the school has "closed all the shades to keep students inside the building from seeing the scene outside."
UPDATE: 1010Wins reports, "Authorities said that he went to an 11th floor dance studio, opened a window and jumped on Wednesday. His mother was at the scene. The teen's brother also attends Dalton. The boy had won academic awards and was involved in school activities, including its Web site."

maybe his trust fund was managed by madoff
That's disgusting. It is not something to make jokes about.
Yeah, $5bn is serious stuff...
(sorry, sorry, sorry...)
This comment board is just trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls... it's best not to take their bait and stay out of the sewer altogether.
It's par for the course for many of the posters here. They find it very easy to make fun of the problems of strangers from behind the veil of anonymity afforded by the Net. A few days ago, it was The Edge and Snoopy making fun of the comatose stockbroker/cabdriver whose only sin was that he was struck in the head by an unknown assailant.
Next season on Gossip Girl...
Wow...very sad.
Dalton has been getting a lot of bad press lately with this and not getting any kids into Harvard last year.
dean wareham can perform at the eulogy
fugothamist, you're a piece of shit.
Why? maybe he was just trying to be funny but it's an entirely realistic possibility. If it was a suicide, maybe the kid already had problems and his family losing their money pushed him over the edge. When I was in college some kid killed himself because he was failing organic chemistry and he didn't think he would get into a good med school. Obviously he was already in a depressed state but that was the final straw.
Kids killing themselves is a terrible thing in general, but it's particularly tragic if it's over a school grade. It's tough to convince a high-pressured intelligent student that in a few years time, none of that shit matters in the least bit.
Kid had to be depressed. They don't do that stuff without thinking about it for a while. Bad grades or whatever may have triggered that final decision. I feel awful for the kid's family and all at that school.
r1b2, i love you
(funny thing is, my tasteless joke has a decent chance of being accurate)
What chance, 10%, 50%, 75%? What is a decent chance? And I think you meant "fact is my tasteless joke". Perhaps it is. But perhaps it isn't.
At 17 it was more likely academic, social or family related. Teenager are undeveloped and yet still called on to confront profound complex adult situation.
What's insulting about the comment is that you assume this child was rich and took his own life because he no longer has money. That someone is so fixated on wealth is an insult. That they are so shallow and superficial is an insult. You meant it that way. So don't back peddle now. It's pretty common these days; the rich are an easy target. Who could defend them? Hell even dead apparently you can make fun.
Never mind your assumption. Who's to say it wasn't the child of a teacher and these schools offer financial aide as well as scholarships. Would you be sad and compassionate if the child wasn't rich?
holy sh*t chill the f*ck out
r.i.p.
was it really over grades? isn't it mid terms?
or Gossip girl? and why isn't that show off the air?
and out of MY city.
with that, My thoughts go out to this young man
and his family.
I would rather jump off a building than go to Dalton, so I can understand that happening. I've always disliked that school the most amongst the private schools. I went to an UWS private school and the social climate in those schools could definitely drive someone to extremes.
I wish every American War Criminal on earth would fall off a building. A very, very HIGH building.
I thought so...
I walked by this today a little while after it happened. It was terrible and very upsetting.
Please don't make jokes about it.
It is that time of year when students are hearing back from colleges. So I am willing to bet that it had to do with him not getting accepted into a particular school.
As someone who attended one of the prep schools in NYC, I can tell you that this is an extremely stressful time for students. Parents remember to make sure that your children know that it is not the end of the world if they do not get accepted into a specific school that life will still be ok. They already have enough pressure as it is, you don't need to add to it.
This is very sad and not something to make jokes about.
You can't help what you're born in to.
Wealthy or poor this person had a life just like anyone, and any of you would expect some empathy if this happened to you.
las2381 - sorry but the boy was in 11th grade, not even applying yet.
I can't believe no one's said it yet, so I will.
Dalton? More like Falton.
Har har.
And seriously, people, chill out. God, NYC and the grand U S of A have their a-holes puckered way too tight. Try laughing once in a while.
Of course it's sad and horrible, but jeez, it was his choice. No one pushed him off that ledge.
