A man seen assaulting a woman on a Midtown sidewalk was killed when his getaway car crashed into a garbage truck earlier this morning. NY1 explains, "Police say officers on their way to a reported armed robbery inside a subway station came across a man hitting a woman with a baseball bat near West 52nd Street and Broadway." When the cops tried to approach the man, he "jumped into" a waiting car. The car then crashed into the truck on 7th Avenue, killing the suspect and critically injuring the female driver. The garbage truck's occupants had minor injuries and the assault victim is in stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital.

Update: A reader took a photograph of the 7th Avenue crash scene this morning.

This is such a heartwarming story. Too bad they don't all end this way.

Well, that solves that case.

That's some nice work, there, Lou.

You people are horrible -- this is an awful story. I mean, just look at that car -- I think that's a Buick Roadmaster! Those were great cars -- 5.7 liter V-8 engines, rear-wheel drive, seats like a sofa-bed, and drove like a boat. The last great big American car, before everyone started driving SUV's. And they totalled it!

Oh, yeah, and some jerk's dead.

I guess garbage pickup came early for him.

This should happen all to time.

I passed this car on the way to work this morning, it was on a flatbed truck on 9th Avenue. When I was walking by, I thought that it looked tragic. I guess it was more tragic than I expected. Death sucks, even for bad guys.

I would agree with you, but any man that assaults a woman deserves the same fate.

It's great that some asshat's dead, but the taxpayers will now get stuck with the bill for medical services given to the driver. Should have left her for dead...

I bet the black, evil specters from Ghost came out and grabbed him too.

From that pic it looks more like the truck hit the car rather then the car hit the truck. Also was the car a drop top? How did the roof come off so clean?

The roof was most likely removed in the extraction of the occupants by NYPD ESU or FDNY.

Oh Ya, makes sense...the jaws of life...

Did they throw the perp's body in the garbage truck when they were done? He really isn't worth the cost of a post or the pine box.

It's solutions like the one that Felix came up with that will help us curtail government spending and get America back on track. I'm for all criminals armed with anything but their fists getting transported via garbage trucks to the ER, jail, court, etc... If the compactor gets in their way, then maybe they'll remember not to beat an innocent lady with a bat next time.

Too bad the CT chimp died, as it would've been pretty sweet to see it intervene in this situation and serve justice where it is deserved.

Bloomy needs to give that garbage man a raise!

He's a private carter so Bloomy can not give him a reward through city funding.

Was the perp wearing his seatbelt? Remember "Buckle Up. It's the Law!"

Finally, a news item that all Gothamist commenters can agree on. Maybe the answer to the city's crime problems isn't more cops, but rather a roving fleet of garbage trucks.

awesome justice.
accidental hero.

That's EXACTLY why it's called a GARBAGE COLLECTION truck. I pity the SI landfill that'll house this scumbag for eternity.

Horrible Horrible Horrible. Someone should sue GM for not having proper braking systems.

Hopefully Amro Carting tips their loads in a proper landfill. We wouldn't want the likes of those two dumped anywhere near our beloved watersheds.

Nice work! Congrats garbage men.
I hope the garbage truck wasn't badly damaged.
The blood didn't stain the streets did it?

i was walking to work on 54th street yesterday morning, and i saw this car parked between 9th and 10th avenues. not sure why it was there, and it was gone by lunchtime, but it was pretty gruesome. death does suck, even for bad guys.
