McCain '08 Staffer Joins Bloomberg '09 Team

2009_02_jhaze.jpg Politicker NY reports that Mayor Bloomberg's 2009 re-election team has added Jill Hazelbaker, the communications director for Senator John McCain's 2008 presidential bid, as a "move to boost his credibility with Republicans." (The independent Mayor wouldn't mind being on the Republican line in the voting booth.) The Mayor Mike 3X team includes notable Democratic strategists, including Hillary Clinton's longtime communications bulldog Howard Wolfson. Wolfson said of Hazelbacker's hiring, "Jill is one of the most talented communications professionals in the country. We are lucky to have her aboard." Even McCain weighed in, "Jill brings to the table a skill set that is valuable to any campaign and Mayor Bloomberg is fortunate to have her onboard. I wish him and the campaign all the best."

    Stupid.

  • Mr Mel

    Why hire the loser?

  • NannyState

I'd hit it like Iowa in January.

What exactly does a communications director do?

  • Snoopy

That is great news. Hopefully she will continue her track record.

Hi, my name is Jill what's yours? Welcome to our nominating committee party.

Have a nice day. And thank you for using AT&T Worldwide.

Until now I thought Bloomberg would win in a walkaway.

The fact is that in the incestuous world of campaign management it doesn't matter much whether you win or lose. There's a small pool of insiders (or arguably, two small pools) and they'll always have work. Relative level of success impacts your pay level more than it does your ability get hired.

Kind of like with NFL coaches.

I'm not sure that's a well that a politican should drink from, but it's better than choosing someone from Guiliani's Florida-based campaign.

  • mdev

Yeah, being a part of the McCain campaign is something I'd be hesitant to keep on my CV.

  • ides_of_march

That's true. Guiliani could have sued his campaign strategy advisors fo malpractice.
