Mock Funeral for the G Train

Let's face it, the G train has long been ignored by the MTA (a lot of the typos can even be found on that line), so it's not all that surprising that they've proposed to cut back its service (no more G to Queens on evenings and weekends; PDF of proposed changes). This morning the line became one of many to be eulogized at a mock funeral service (previously straphangers paid their respects to the Z train, the M and the R).

The Save the G Coalition, along with State Assembly Members Joseph Lentol and Hakeem Jeffries were amongst today's mourners who gathered at the Court Square subway station in Queens. Those who attended wore black armbands and listened to bagpiper (and mock funeral staple) John Maynard. Lentol had this to say about his friend: "The G Train has been on life support for years and all of our efforts to revive it and bring it new life have gone completely ignored despite the tens of thousands of people who rely on it every day and the many more who would if the G were actually a reliable train. So now we stand here at its funeral as we ask everyone to stand with us and take action one last time to save the G."

More people than ever take the "G". What a mistake.

this is ridiculous. they obvi haven't been riding the G on weekdays from like 5-8pm because it rivals the L in sardine can-ness. this makes m angry. we need to get obama involved. save the g!

new york ruining my life even more

Judging by the number of microphones on that podium (one, from channel 55?) the G train has no chance.

"this is ridiculous. they obvi haven't been riding the G on weekdays from like 5-8pm"

The G already terminates at Court Square during those hours. This proposed change wouldn't affect that situation at all one way or the other.

But as far as your complaint goes, I bet that if it were put to a vote the majority of G riders would trade away the current few hours of service beyond Court Square for about four more trains a day on the remaining part of the line.

These are the same guys who wouldn't support congestion pricing. Congestion pricing would have provided funds for things like the G train. They are the people to blame.

Amen to that, SohoTimmy. People need to start calling these pandering politicians out for being such hypocrites.

I bet they oppose East River Bridge tolls, too, even though somewhere in range of 3% of their constituents would actually be effected by them. Who cares that the great majority of their constituents ride the subway? We'll just throw a mock funeral and offer no other solutions.

How about a moment of silence for all the innocent men, woman & children whom you immoral securities fraudsters & War Criminals have MURDERED?

Still no eulogy for the W train? Wtf.

Schucks, just a few months ago they were saying they'd be extending the G to terminate at Church in Brooklyn. This would have taken the load off the F and perhaps even opened the door for the F to use the extra express tracks in Brooklyn.

I would be willing to pay higher fares.

Any G train rider knows it barely ever ran past Court Square on the weekends. The G train "died" years ago.

Seriously, how could they cut back service any more than they already have?

Will it be running with only two cars now?
As it is, the train would arrive at the platform and everyone would run like lemmings to cram through one side of the half operating door of the last car.

Didn't the hepcats start all this when they partied on the last Q Diamond?

The MTA has been trying to snuff the G for ages. Take a look at the decrepit Van Alst and Court Sq stations. Thing doesn't enter Manhattan so they don't give a crap.

The G and the GG before it seems to have always been the redheaded bastard stepchild of the Transit Authority probably because it is the only line that doesn't go to Manhattan.

It looks like WLNY TV-55 was the only station that covered it. Someone put the video of the report on YouTube.

When I went to Pratt back in the old days the GG was the only service after they shut down the Myrtle Ave El. If they bury that service forget about Clinton Hill. It was up and coming forty years ago and it will take another to forty years to get it going again.

Good! Peace out G train! You were the worst thing about my life for five long years.

goodbye g train, all it took was a couple rides for me to hate you

first off...ENOUGH with the 'subway typos' crap. who cares?

second, for people that have to ride the G, this could potentially suck. i guess we all could take buses into queens instead though. think how GREAT that would be! (gag me)

third, why people have such boners for hating on the G is so odd. yes, it sucks late at night. but, i can think of a few trains that have similar schedules (yes, even ones in manhattan-GASP!). if you ride it during typical commuting hours, it's actually a pretty great train.

yep.

All these mock funerals are absurd -service should be improving and not cutting back - when is a real agency going to take over the MTA and make it what it really needs to be?

It doesn't matter whether it's the MTA or some other agency that runs NYC transit if politicians (like these very politicians pandering to the media by staging this mock funeral) refuse to fund it properly. They're as bad as everyone else with wanting something for nothing. "There should be more service but someone else should pay for it." Gimme a break.

I don't mind the G, but I've taken to just staying on the F when I need to get from Brooklyn to Queens because of the inconsistent service.

Thanks, MTA, for being the horse-shit organization that you are and offering no good alternative for inter-borough transit that doesn't involve Manhattan.
