The government may have pushed back what was supposed to be D-Day when stations were originally set to switch over from analog to digital this Tuesday, but much of the television world is already turning their wheels in preparation for the switch. Tonight Fox will air the first-ever episode of The Simpsons in HD. And to ring it in, the show is premiering dramatic changes to its opening credit sequence for the first time in its twenty year run!
Worst. Credits. Ever? We don't think so. The next major switchover in animation comes March 11th when South Park goes HD. And NY1 says that nearly 500 stations are sticking to that February 17th conversion date, because they say it's too costly to keep broadcasting in analog.

it's not a "switch over from analog to high-definition" but rather a "switch over from analog to digital" transmission.

Actually, both are wrong. The stations are already broadcasting in digital and have been for some time. Ask anyone with an HDTV or a digital converter box. The deadline is when the stations are supposed to stop analog broadcasting, not start digital. They're not exclusive of each other in terms of technology, because the digital transmissions are on new frequencies. But the government needs the stations to stop using their old frequencies so they can be turned over to companies which paid nearly $20 billion for the right to use them, including Verizon. It's unfair to keep pushing the deadline back just because some people refused to heed the warnings about the impending transition. It's like buying yourself one of those $20 million penthouses and then being told you can't move in because the previous owner hasn't moved their furnishings out yet.
Already been getting free HD channels on my HDTV. All you got to do is plug in an antenna. Pushing the date back to June won't make anymore people smarter.
i don't want to be the guy that hates on the simpsons -- i thought this was pretty funny -- but homer getting hit by the car instead of running from it pretty much sums up what's wrong with the show these days

SO apu is the one who banged Octopussy and is the father of all those kids? man, this title sequence had a whole lot of overt racism in it. I miss the old simpsons when they were the king of subtle racism. You'd be sleeping obliviously 5 hours later and wake up and go "oh shit! they just made fun of asians! hahahaha!" now they just hit you over the head with it a la family guy.
The recent Saint Patrick's episode certainly perpetrated blatant Irish stereotypes, but I think the writers were mocking the public's perception.
Further, the Simpson's always made fun of Italians, Jews, Christians, and Scotsmen, but it's light, playful fun.
Isn't the entire show an edifice to the failings of white America?
Nice to see Grandpa in the opening, but the elusive couch is stupid.
After the mediocre movie, the Simpsons' bar has been forever lowered.
I'm guessing everything after Homer getting hit by Marge's car in the garage will change weekly. So the elusive couch won't be there in the future.
Then again, if it's kept the same in the future, it would mean shorter episodes, which would mean lower production costs.
The trend in TV shows is to shorter title sequences, not longer. If they want shorter episodes, they'll make them, then sell the extra time to advertisers.
It's cool to watch it in slo-mo and see what everyone is doing in the quick-pan before the garage scene. Fat Tony and crew are burying someone. Patty and Selma are sunbathing. God and the devil are shaking fists at each other. And I love Maggie and Gerald shaking fists also!
