Two Die in Speeding Vehicle Coming Off West Side Highway

2009_02_wsh.jpg A man and a woman ended up dead this morning after their car flipped over on the West Side Highway, taking place just an hour after another fatal car accident took place overnight in Staten Island. Police say that the 1996 Ford Mustang was speeding down the West Side Drive when it attempted to make a left turn heading east onto 56th Street. The car flipped and claimed the lives of the driver, a 45-year-old man, and his 20-year-old female passenger. Police tell Newsday the vehicle clipped a parked cab and then hit a concrete divider, flipping over and landing on its roof. The victims were brought to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital where both were pronounced dead. The speed limit on the West Side Highway is 35 mph and the traffic light at 56th street is one of the first ones drivers encounter after coming off the Henry Hudson Parkway South.

I think most drivers would be surprised there's a speed limit on the West Side HIghway, especially late at night.

They certainly drive as if there's NOT!

Driving recklessly on the West Side Highway seems like a spectacularly stupid way to go out. It's not a real highway, and it's obviously complicated and dangerous.

jen go back to kansas, why would a driver be surprised there is a speed limit on a road?
that makes no sense.

Yeah, Jen's a real flyover hick alright. But you're in the know b/c you're savvy that drivers in NYC are aware of and obey all posted traffic laws and signs--and completely clueless about the actual behavior of NYC drivers.

And is Kansas going to be the new default Ohio for despising non-natives? I may have missed a meme-o.

I think the speed limit within the city streets in 20MPH excluding the west side highway and the fdr.

The speeding story just said it is 30. (Before I read that I thought it was 35.) It's funny that there are actually no signs around to remind you of this. You are just supposed to know.

There are plenty of places in the boroughs where slower or faster limits are posted.

The city-wide speed limit is 30 mph except where otherwise posted. I'm pretty sure that most, if not all, of the West Side Hwy is posted 35 mph but I could be wrong.

I know exactly how that stretch of road is like, I can envision it in my head. Driver speeding down the West Side (just like 5 or 6 ignorant rap songs tell him to do) He might be under the influence? Negotiating that first light of the WSH is tricky, its downhill, meaning the Mustang won't have much traction and when he slams on the brakes it amplifies the low grip. Turning the wheel is the final piece of the "can't control a car trifecta". Poor Uniquea (celebrity baby name alert.) a 45yr old man with a chick half his age not his daughter? Fair to say some substances could have been involved.
