Video: Joaquin Phoenix Crashes and Bores on Letterman
Actor and possible future rap superstar Joaquin Phoenix took a seat across from David Letterman last night (to "promote" Two Lovers), finally pushing Farrah Fawcett out of the top slot for all time most incoherent interview subject (Farrah video!). Incase you missed it, here's the five minutes of teeth pulling:
Viewers are now left questioning the appearance—is Phoenix trying to channel Andy Kaufman, or is he battling a substance abuse problem again? Either way, only time will tell if he can rise from the ashes left on the Late Show studio floor. He promised to come back to perform a song, if invited—and hopefully he'll study up on how Andy did it before taking the mic.

Did anyone watch last night as they re-aired the interview? Watching a second time around it was even more obvious JP is up to something, unfortunately his acting in this role, is rather lackng.

I didn't see the interview, but he doesn't look like a rapper. More like ZZ Top ...

Could be JP any more clueless, aside of totally self involved.
I do like the dude, but this face that he's on is sooooo self indulgent that he seems to be just out of touch with reality.
What a very sensitive soul making a clown out of himself!
Does he even realize he wasn't going to fkn Charlie Rose?!
This was a prime time variety show for the very mediocre masses, where you have to be willing to amuse people to be praised.
Wrong TV show JP, get a clue!

hes s bore

totally a hoax, and a pretty good one

He is clearly acting and it is one of the funniest things I have seen in a while. His timing is too perfect for it to be an accidental effect of a drug induced haze (i.e. taking a drink of water just as Letterman asks him a question.) Even though the glasses and facial hair make it difficult to see his face clearly, you can still catch him smiling and almost breaking character. Plus, he is wringing his hands throughout the interview, something liars do when they are not confident in their performance.

Good observations, esp about liars. My Dad interlocks his fingers and rubs a palm with his thumb; that's how I know he's lying.
Another interpretation is that JP is simply bored as shit with his own career and is playing the media out of boredom.
Dave's an asshole, though, and it's not funny anymore, because it's no longer self mocking

They do rehearsals for these things to make sure they hit their punch lines and talking points in the allotted amount of time. Even though I like him as an actor, the blame's got to be on JP for not holding his end up. Dave was totally justified for digging on him.
Or it's all some kind of Kaufman-esque ruse that only these guys are in on.

Well I guess the Hip-Hop Rabbi has competition ......

Whoa, the most disastrous appearance I've ever seen on a tv show... and so freaking hilarious!
This first commenter must be out of his mind, I've never seen anyone that handles this sort of stuff better than Letterman, the man is a living legend!
Just keep watching, he's there pushing the guys button and for all we know he's got his eyes closed thinking of getting back to the stuff he left back in the dressing room. Hopefully, this will serve as a wake up call.
It looked like he was interviewing a Joaquin Phoenix impersonator they found at Grand Central. Seriously hilarious!

I went ahead and watched the Farrah Fawcett video, and she definitely has got nothing on this guy! At least she talked and reacted.

Please tell what was so funny? Joaquin was out of it, so Letterman pulled out some great material about the unibomber? Yeah that was a real knee slapper. Poking fun at impaired people is just lame-it isn't funny to me. I must be out of my mind feeling sorry for Joaquin.

Maybe it's just cause i've been following JP and his weirdness lately, his Andy Kauffman-esque, wanna be demeanor last night was all i saw. If you watch it and focus on JP, numerous times throughout the interview, like when he would pause and look down, or look away, it honestly looks like he himself is trying very hard not to crack up(i just watch the video here, you can't see that on such a small scale here, need to see a bigger/closer look)because DL was just flat out funny w/those questions. Many stars have put things in writing about what they will/will not talk about in an interview, so even if he was doing the interview to promote his movie as a possible contractual obligation, he could have easily said, this and that is off limits, i will only discuss the movie.

Joaquin is a genius. He's totally subverting The Hollywood System. It's totally Glorious. I can't wait for Casey Affleck's documentary of this Historic performance art piece.
Or...
Perhaps he's just a big douche who erroneously thinks that he's doing something special when, in fact, you can see similar, but better performances by panhandlers on the NY subway everyday.

Late Show. Letterman's show has been The Late Show for quite a while now. Even Conan O'Brien is leaving Late Night in a week or so.
I'm still looking forward to "Two Lovers". Not so much to see Joaquin and/or Gwynnie, as much as the sight of those two riding on the Q train and living Brighton Beach.

Looks like a bad act to me. This was nothing compared to Crispin Glover's appearance.

I thought Letterman handled it pretty well. The awkward silences were used to good effect. I found the whole thing pretty amusing.
