Early-decision applications to Cooper Union, which does not charge tuition, have skyrocketed this year, the Times reports, surprising no one. The school is experiencing a 70 percent surge in applications so far this year, compared to annual increases of 5 percent to 10 percent over the last decade. Emphasizing the obvious, the dean of admissions tells the Times, "I’m pretty confident that the economy played a big role. You probably had a lot of parents who said: ‘Look, I know you’re looking at Cooper Union. You ought to make it your first choice.' " Overall, the school expects to receive 3,300 applications for 265 spots in the Class of 2013, making the already competitive process even more cutthroat.

i hope all these people realize how insanely intense that school is. my sister is a sophomore in the art school and has about four meltdowns a week. also because there's no tuition parents are expected to make frequent "charitable contributions" but i guess that's still a shitload less than shelling out 30 grand a year.
if you can get into cooper union, it's still cheaper to go to state school. if you're good enough to get in, you'll most likely have at least a 1/2 to full ride at state school, and cost of living outside of the city is low enough to pay the difference in tuition, if there is any.
here's a tip for everyone at cooper union. Make all your art projects about giant sized human genitalia. Like a huge vagina that you can walk through. Guaranteed A's and critical acclaim from your peers.
Vaginal art is no longer 'in'. Cloacal Art is the hottest ride at CU.
In (and out) before recession.
isn't cooper union also an engineering and architecture school? 265 is the total for all schools?
Jacque, I'm pretty sure Cooper also has those other schools as well; an adjunct I took a class with at another school was a physics prof at Cooper.
"...making the already competitive process even more cutthroat. "
Nothing like a Depression to bring out the better devils of their nature.
yeah 265 is the total for both schools, the art school admits like 100 and engineering has the rest. it's fucking smalllll
There was an article in the Times a few months ago that talked about how many more kids were looking at state school. I was kind of irritated by parents talking about how their kids college fund was decimated by the stock market. By the time your kid is looking at colleges most of that money should be out of stocks.
Darwinism at work:
Stupid parents leave kid's college money in mutual funds 6 months before kid's high school graduation. Market tanks. Money disappears. Kid goes to SUNY. Kid graduates and enters the workforce, never leaving middle management. That affects grandkid's college fund. Grandkid will also go to SUNY, if he's lucky.
