In the first response from Alex Rodriguez since reports this weekend that he tested positive for steroids in 2003, Alex Rodriguez has told ESPN's Peter Gammons, "I did take a banned substance. For that, I'm very sorry and deeply regretful."
Gammons interviewed A-Rod in Miami where he told ESPN's senior baseball reporter, "Back then, [baseball] was a different culture. It was very loose. I was young, I was stupid, I was naïve. I wanted to prove to everyone I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time."
He claims that Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the MLB Players' Association, had previously informed A-Rod that he may or may not have tested positive for steroids in 2003. (Orza today denied previous accusations of tipping off Rodriguez to upcoming tests.) Rodriguez says he wasn't being truthful to himself in his 2007 interview with Katie Couric where he denied using steroids.
The full A-Rod-Gammons interview will be broadcast on the 6 p.m. edition of Sportscenter.
Update 4:45: The first part of the interview can be seen below (with A-Rod still wearing his Kabbalah bracelet).

What a fucking idiot. With the talent he had, he didn't need the juice. Now his legacy is done. A-Rod, you're definitely not "worth being one of the greatest players of all time" now.
A-Rod
You must still be young, stupid, and naive if you think baseball fans will believe that you never cheated while playing for the Yankees.
Then again, you find Madonna attractive, so who knows.
"You must still be young, stupid, and naive if you think baseball fans will believe that you never cheated while playing for the Yankees."
There was no testing before 2003; the list of 104 players on which his name appears came out of the very first round of tests, which was done to determine if steroid use was widespread enough to mandate regular random testing. That answer was yes.
Since he's been with the Yankees, random testing has been done. He's been tested, as has everyone else, and hasn't had a positive result.
It's very likely that he hasn't used anything illegal since he's been with the Yankees.
And now, let's see the other 103 names!
But there's no urine test for HGH, right? So what's not to say that A-Rod hasn't been using PEDs with the Yankees.
Not that it looks like he's taking HGH, but still. One positive test and you can't believe a single word out of the cheater.
Thanks Union!
"Thanks Union!"
Really it's not the union's fault. The test results were at BALCO, and the feds seized them when they raided that lab. Both the MLBPA and MLB itself had promised secrecy, but it was taken out of their hands.
"done for a substance that was not yet banned
To be accurate, they were already banned. There was no punishment in place, though, for a violation. Which is a pretty pointless rule, sure, but that's what it was.
They should cancel his contract and send him home.
This won't stop unless Major League Baseball takes a tougher stance on performance enhancing drugs. They should take a page from the NFL's book
Keep dreaming.
ARod did the only thing possible in admitting his use of banned substances. His quest for the HR record as well as his place in Cooperstown is forever jeopardized. He joins the "asterisk generation." Whether fans will ever cheer him again is questionable; I suspect if he helps bring a pennant to the Bronx, he'll hear fan support. If he continues to choke in the clutch, he'll be persona non grata.
BTW, both Araton (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/08/sports/baseball/08sotaraton.html?ref=baseball) and Kepner (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/08/sports/baseball/08kepner.html?ref=baseball) wrote brilliantly on l'Affaire Alex this weekend.
Who really cares? The Yankees will stand by their man like they did with Giambi and Pettite-admitted juicers. The guy cheated on his wife with a newborn at home-what is his story about that? He sticks needles in his ass and his legacy is tarnished. Yawn
Who gives a shit? half of the MLB, NBA, NFL, etc has done or currently uses performance enhancing drugs.
A-Rod needs to prove one thing; GET A STICKIN' RING!
You inject something foreign into your body and you don't know exactly what you were guilty of using??? Come on now, that's just not being honest, ARod.
Baseball is a scam.
