Video: Corner Bistro Scuffle Caught on Tape

Surveillance footage from the incident involving Nick Haramis and an employee at Corner Bistro was put on YouTube today. Around the 1:13 mark you can see the waiter being grabbed by the neck, which seems to be the point that quickly escalates the situation.

The person who uploaded this video has said, "Since Nick and the owner agree to drop charges and call it even, there will be no lawsuit at the moment." Though we're guessing Haramis has tasted his last Bistro burger.

i knew that nick haramis was full of shit. so they assaulted the waiter, got their asses beat, then complained about it on the internet, and got the waiter suspended or fired. and to top it off, he pulled the gay-bashing card like the boy who cried wolf, undermining genuine cases of homophobia.

what a douche.

The waiter in question clears the drink glass of a girl at a table while she's talking to her friends, but she catches what he did and calls him on it, probably claiming the glass wasn't empty. The waiter and girl have a heated back and forth in each others faces, then one of her friends, a guy, gets between them to separate them. That's when he appears to lay an arm on the waiter who then takes him down.

I waited tables and tended bar when I first moved here years ago. You put up with a lot of aholes in the bar biz, it comes with the territory. The waiter should look for a less stressful line of work.

was it their table to begin with or was she just putting
her glass there?
the staff looks like they back ea. other up or looking
for some action. do they have a bouncer?

It looks like the girl just comandeered the table. This kind of thing happens all the time on a busy night in a bar area. The waiter should have asked her and her friend to move. Instead, he sneakily bussed her drink away. He mishandled the entire thing from beginning to end. If it were my establishment, I'd have that waiter's ass outta there in a heartbeat.

I saw the full length version of this video elsewhere. The way it's been edited here, you can't tell what led up to the altercation. The girl got the ball rolling initially, but the waiter isn't in control of his temper. It looks like the guy who got knocked down was trying to separate the two idiots, the girl and the waiter.

Best video of the day.

Is the waiter involved the angry asian guy someone else eluded too in the comments from the original post?

Lesson here is don't grab someone's neck and initiate this all and blog about how you were assaulted when you were the one who started it all.

The waiter is pissed and he's right in the girl's face. He's even aggressively jabbing repeatedly with his hand/finger right in her face. The guy who blogged about this who got knocked down may be irritating or whatever, but judging from this video, he's trying to do the right thing. He squeezed between the two to separate them and that's how the contact was initiated. The waiter was out of control and has no business working in a bar/restaurant.

Jerry,

I realize you are upset that you got knocked down (Jerry = Nick?) and no doubt waitstaff should be more friendly then that, after all their business is people, but its fairly obvious you (Nick) grabbed the guys neck -- I would surely react by defending myself in that situation; pointing a finger at you or your female friend while not nice, does not justify putting your hands on someone.

Nah, I'm with Jerry. Even though this is far from what was described in the blog story, the waiter is acting like a thug. He's not "defending himself."

People get out of line in New York all the time. Frankly, a lot of time they get away with it because it's not worth correcting. Guess what - a scuffle in the middle of your restaurant definitely falls under "not worth it."

I don't think it was wise for Corner Bistro to post this vid. It certainly doesn't make me want to go there.

I'm starting to sway my opinion a little. Maybe the waiter should have just told them all to leave, or grabbed the guys hands; not body slam him.

Actually, so am I. I just looked at the video again. While the guy does try to get between the girl and the waiter, right before the waiter lunges at the guy, the guy has his left hand/arm near the waiter's chest, and when he moves it, the waiter's head jerks back.

So it looks like everybody is wrong in this incident. But I stand by what I said about this waiter. He was never in control of his temper. And Waitering 101 includes a chapter on how you don't EVER try to deal with unhappy customers like that girl. That's what managers are for. A smart waiters would have immediately backed off and gone to management to work it out. He shouldn't let the door hit him on the way outta Corner Bistro.

Oops, the commenter I was talking to (who used the f----- word) got deleted. I'm not talking to YOU. Please have a nice day.

I think you should post not the full video, not this shortened version. In the full 5 minute version at around 55 sec. you see where the friend goes and begins to berate the server and appear to be the one amplifying the situation. And for those saying this is a girl, I think it is actually a dude, and in the original story Nick referred to it being his bf involved with him - not the gender of a person makes a difference in how they should be treated, but some of the commenters are still spinning this as Nick somehow stepping in to honorably protect a woman. If you watch the lead up on the full video Nick seems to be holding his friend back from the server more than the other way around. It seems they tried to grab a table that wasn't theirs by jumping the line and hold up a four top at a busy time to share an order of fries and drink water. The server likely handled this poorly, but what Nick has done for genuine incidents of violence perpetrated on the LGBTQ community should be the core story here, not a poorly trained server. He got a dude fired and stirred up the potential for the boycott of a restaurant by crying gay-bashing over an incident he instigated and couldn't finish... We must end violence against entitled pricks everywhere!

after seeing this vid, I think I may go to the CB
to show my support for the staff. it's freakin packed in there and they're just doing their job.

What happened here is an everyday occurrence in NYC. They should never have allowed women in places that serve alcohol. Look at how McSorley's lost all its character after they left broads in. They are nothing but trouble.

Where did the gay thing come in? And Corner Bistro will survive this episode to serve millions and millions more hamburgers in the future.

If you lay your hand on someone....prepare to have it handed back to you. Simple as that. Nick haramis is clearly just a self important jerk and since he clearly lied about how things started and why he got manhandled then I believe he lied about the rest. I have no sympathy.

dimes

No burger is worth the bullshit attitudes by both staff and customers that one finds at the Corner Bistro. Last time I was there the staff was rude and the people I was waiting in line with were the kind of walking abortions that are ruining the city.

i'm pretty sure that's not a girl starting the fight, but a guy with long hair. i'm assuming it's the boyfriend in the story.

user-pic

OK I get it now, the "girl" everyone is referring to is the boyfriend that Nick referred to. BUT ! what I see on the tape is that the waiter reached over from another table and took his glass. You see they boyfriend get up ON HIS OWN and go over and confront the waiter. you can see his big pointy white shoes in the upper left.
This DIRECTLY CONTRADICTS what Nick 'reported' on Blackbook.

My boyfriend sat down at a four-top. A man—a busboy or a waiter, definitely not a host—told him that our group couldn’t sit down. “You have to order food,” he said. “We’ll start with fries,” said my boyfriend, not moving. The man then grabbed the back of his shirt, at which point I reached in, instinctively, to take his hand away. I was then thrown down, the side of my head the last thing to hit the ground. There was some confusion as my boyfriend tried to stop the whole thing, and was then punched in the face, while the Bistro worker screamed “faggots” a few times, for good measure
No one was pulled up from the chair and SHAME ON YOU NICK FOR LYING Where is the update NOW on Blackbook??

Either way, the waiter participated in the ruckus and instead of de-escalating the situation, he made things worse. Easy call for any employer: you write him up or fire him -and given all the recent anecdotes about this wanna-be thug, he should be fired. The owner controls his house, not some street garbage bouncer or waiter. The owner has to take control here and end this little drama.

Imagine the manager came out. What would have happen? The "lady" would have started yelling and screaming and the manager would have gotten fed up and told them to "get your fat pansy @sses out of my place". Then Nick et al would have written on blackbook that the manager is a homophobic prick. At least in the real world version, someone gets thrown to the floor.

So wait, you are calling for the firing of the waiter who was defending himself? I am sick of people here who seem to think that, even now, the waiter was wrong and should be fired. How about taking a step back and seeing how you took one guy's story at face value and was screaming for the head of this waiter and the destruction of the Corner Bistro? How you allowed a drunk liar who somehow had a very powerful forum to spread his hatred. You are so quick to condemn the judgement of a waiter. How about considering the judgement of a highly educated (and self-described talented) editor of a magazine? To cry wolf about homophobia in the West Village? Is that something we need at this time? How it hurts when your peers act up and misbehave. It's like a mirror to your own behavior and something you have to defend at any cost.

If you own a business, there are things you can control, like your waitstaff, and the things you can't control, such as a customer's bad behavior. Of course you remove the problem guest but first you attempt to de-escalate the situation, not because you're a pussy or because the patron was right, you do that out of concern for your other guests. Don't they deserve to enjoy their evening? If you have an employee that contributes to an escalating situation, that is a person who has to go. You bar the bad customer but you also make it clear to your employees that they aren't there for their own pleasure and amusement but for your customers'. This situation was out of control and the staff did little to resolve it. The negative publicity says it all. Regardless of motive, Mr Haramis succeeded in damaging a business but he did not do it alone. In agreeing to a mutual standdown, the owner admits as much: both sides were to blame and it could have ended discreetly and without Haramis's histrionic Blackbook posting...or the You Tube video. The owner must regain control of his crew and his business and that means getting a nuissance with bad juju out of there.

I agree with what many of you said about the attitudes in this place. The last time I checked the beers were only $2 but the attitudes of the bartender (when my friend wanted a mixed drink) were outrageous. The servers seem to have caught on to the nasty attitude of the staff there.

Not surprised at all that this happened. Definitely surprised it ended up on the Internet.

On the video, at 00:39:56 you see a person in a white shirt reach over and remove a glass from the table. Seconds later you see the person (presumably the one who was drinking from that glass) leave the table and return to the area with the white shirt.

We've all been there. Our drink is cleared before we were finished with it. The waiter might have been trying to cut the guy off, or just speed up his departure. The drinker wanted a fresh drink...fight ensued.
