Pencil This In

0209valleydolls.jpg FILM: Cult classic Valley of the Dolls will screen tonight at the Rubin Museum, with an intro from none other than Alan Cumming. The 1967 film stars Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, and Sharon Tate as three glamorous women who "will do whatever it takes to get to the top. Based on the Jacqueline Susann bestseller, this final film in the 'The Proverbial Pictureshow' series illustrates the Bhutanese proverb “Medicine, if taken with knowledge; poison, if abused.” More details here.

THEATER: One of the few pleasures of winter in New York comes when one begins spotting posters for Richard Foreman's new extravaganza pasted around town. This year's theatrical mindfuck is a collaboration with avant-garde composer John Zorn called Astronome: A Night At The Opera. We're told that it is, indeed, an opera, "with Zorn’s recorded score dominated by ecstatic groans, grunts and babbling. Onstage we witness the initiation of a group of people into a world where ambiguous behavior alone leads to freedom—perhaps under the tutelage of the necessary 'false messiah.'" No film is involved this year, but the "colorful, picaresque set resembles something out of an Architectural Digest from Hell." You can't see that in Houston! (Or can you?) — John Del Signore

Saturday // 8 p.m. // The Ontological Theater at St. Mark’s Church [131 East 10th St at 2nd Ave] // $25

It's hard to look at Sharon Tate and not immediately think of her grizzly ending.

"New York Comic Con and the Kidrobot folks say that means so are all of their friends."
I keep reading this and cannot fathom what it is supposed to mean.

Now you get outta my way because I've got a man waiting for me. Yeah? Well that's better than the fags you usually hang around with. At least I never married one! You take that back! *cat-fight ensues*

I try each day to be a little more like Helen Lawson and less like Neeley O'Hara.
