Kings County Hospital Center was founded 175 years ago, but it didn't become truly infamous until last year when that horrible video surfaced, depicting a woman being left for dead on the floor of the ER waiting room for nearly an hour. Now, after a year-long probe, the Justice Department has documented an appalling pattern of sexual and violent assaults at the psychiatric unit. Read no further if you think One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is hard to stomach.
The damning 58 page report [PDF] concludes that the unit is basically being run like a prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney General Loretta King and Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Benton Campbell describe "highly dangerous conditions" which "require immediate attention." Such as:
- Allegations that a woman was raped and that a 14-year-old was forced to perform oral sex on a 16-year-old.
- Also, an autistic patient was allegedly forced to perform oral sex.
- A 14-year-boy caught having sex tried to hang himself with a video game wire.
- Another patient who was supposed to be under close observation cut herself with a paper clip and swallowed the clip. She later swallowed staples in the presence of staff, who called the incident "a minor, self-inflicted injury."
- An October brawl among six patients left one needing surgery.
- The staff routinely administered injections of more than one antipsychotic medication simultaneously, despite the risk of side effects and overdosing.

It was infamous way before that video.
exactly, horror stories out of that place have been coming for over forty years. ask locals.

urgh... those two comments should be one, and they should have been left under the comments I was replying to. Bah.
Read the report. I'm not one for adding more people to an overcrowded prison system...but instead of just replacing the people who allowed these crimes to happen and then covered them up, maybe they should prosecute those people too.
Run a Psych ward like a prison and you should probably end up in one.
She was left to die, not left for dead. And yes, it's been infamous among the people who have to use it for a long time.
King's County has always been a modern-day Bedlam. I recommend viewing "Titicut Follies" a 1967 documentary that exposes the horrors of mental institutions.
There is just way too much oral sex going on there, even for a psych ward.
This place makes Beekman look world-class.
I wondered what Nurse Ratched was doing these days.
And this is within the population at Kings County. Think of all the crazies in the street and what their plight would be if they were re-institutionalized under the present system. The system is and has been broken for too long. The state and feds pay billions for diabetics that go in for amputations because they can't follow their doctor's recommendations but for mental illness? A pittance.
