Ten years ago, outside a Bronx apartment building, the NYPD Street Crimes Unit fired 41 times at unarmed West African immigrant Amadou Diallo. The 22-year-old street peddler died from the 19 shots that hit him, and the shooting raised questions about race relations in the city, police brutality and then Mayor Giuliani's defense of the NYPD. People took to the streets to protest; the Reverend Al Sharpton told NY1, "For 1,200 people for over 13 days, just come by the hundreds and submit nonviolently to jail hadn't happened anywhere in this country since the '60s....It was unprecedented to see former mayors, members of Congress, Academy Award winners like Susan Sarandon going to jail with housewives and regular people every day." (Bruce Springsteen wrote a song, American Skin [41 Shots]—and he was called a dirtbag by a police union.) Though the Street Crimes Unit was disbanded, the four officers involved were acquitted of charges. You can read about more the incident at Court TV and at the NY Times.

Maybe if he didn't take out his wallet he'd still be alive today. The Street Crimes Unit took a lot guns off the street and paved the way for the safer New York we know today. Because of the likes of people such as Al Sharpton and Bruce Springsteen, the city lost an important crime fighting tool. But I'm sure they don't care - they live in New Jersey.
"Maybe if he didn't take out his wallet he'd still be alive today."
You've GOT to be kidding us right? RIGHT???
Ok, ok... you got me. If he listened to the officers and complied with their commands, and didn't take his wallet out, he DEFINITELY would be alive today.

That's a laughable comment. You must be another ignorant ex-LEO or just plain stupid. The "streetcrimes" unit were nothing but thugs with guns, who had an implicit agreement to ignore the US Constitution while the NY DA's office looked the other way, at least until they started killing innocent bystanders.
The majority of the difference in crime has had to do with the remolding of neighborhoods and populations, not the illegal activities of corrupt NYPD officers, for which hundred of thousands of dollars are doled out of taxpayers pockets in lawsuits yearly.
Go back to Staten Island, jackass.
You've been watching to many movies and playing too many video games, my friend. "Thugs with guns, who had an implicit agreement to ignore the US Constitution while the NY DA's office looked the other way." Do you think about the things you are going to say before you write them? Where did you get that information? Al Sharpton? Do you know what the murder rate in NYC was before Street Crimes? Do you have any proof that in less than a decade, "the remolding of neighborhoods and populations" caused the crime rate to drop astronomically, along with the number of people killed on the streets?
Rather than calling people names and telling them to "Go back to Staten Island", you should do some research into the subject. Perhaps joining the auxiliary police will change your opinion on "corrupt NYPD officers" and their "illegal activities". But that's probably asking too much from a closed-minded individual such as yourself.
I agree with your point and think that if 'sOme_gOd' is not trying to be ironic/funny then he/she is an asshole, but why the Staten Island remark? No need to put down my borough to make this point, especially since this happened in the Bronx. Makes YOU seem like a jackass.
