Dire Times: New NYC Budget Cuts 23,000 Jobs, Hikes Sales Tax

Mayor Bloomberg will be giving his budget address later today and it won't be fun: Because of the economic climate, he's proposing to increase sales tax to 8.75% (and putting tax back on clothing under $110; the sales tax is currently 8.375%) in order to raise $900 million. Bloomberg is also proposing to cut 23,000 city jobs, cuts to capital projects and requiring employees to pay for some health care, according to the Daily News. These measures would fill the $4 billion gap and come on top of previously announced cuts.

The Post points out some caveats: The State Legislature and City Council must approve a sales tax hike, plus some of these severe cuts could be avoided "if labor unions don't agree to givebacks and Albany doesn't cough up enough aid." City Councilman David Weprin, who chairs the finance committee, told the NY Times, "It’s certainly not a good-news budget, but it’s seems to be a responsible approach to closing the budget gap, and it’s a reality that we on the Council have to deal with," but also "warned that much could change between now and the July 1 start of the fiscal year and that the budget deal must be agreed on by the mayor, the Council and the Legislature."

Of course, the State is facing its own budget problems.

Someone call this Mfer's bluff. There's no way you can possibly layoff that many teachers. What, will there now be 50 kids in a class? He's just trying to slash teachers' bennys while make sure his millionaire buddies don't have to pay up. Sure, Wall Street is so CRUCIAL to NYC's economy, but this city functions everyday because of working people, not millionaires - they can afford to pay some more taxes - they're not gonna leave the city in mass if their taxes go up. NEW MAYOR PLEASE!!!!

    Here are five more suggestions:

    1. Cut Medicaid.

    2. Cut Medicaid.

    3. Cut Medicaid.

    4. Cut Medicaid.

    5. Cut Medicaid.

YES PETER!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! These savages take, take, take from us, hard working CITIZENS that PAY taxes and they get free health care. I am all for helping the helpless, IF YOU ARE helpless! NOT if you are a skell that scams (drug dealer, pros, job off the books) so on paper it looks like you make nothing so you can get your FREEO insurance! STOP giving away this money. Take that money and give it to the teachers that go to work to TRY to help these savages in the making....

I'm pretty sure that's 23,000 voters that will be looking closely at all challengers in the next election.

How much of taxpayer's money did Bloomberg waste on trying to attract the Olympics, the West Side Railyards, a stadium in Manhattan? None of those came into being, but huge amounts of money were thrown at them. Was it really necessary to paste little "Olympics nominee" stickers on every subway car?

  • snoopydog

He's going to cut 23,000 jobs. Just wait and see if you will miss those freeloaders. I doubt it. The city services will still be the same. Except for the FDNY which do an excellent job, he could probably cut another 23,000 jobs.

And If you don't want to pay the extra sales tax shop in Jersey. If you are buying a $100 blouse from Saks do you really think the extra 37 1/2 cents will make you not buy the blouse?

Let me get this straight, people are loosing jobs daily, the retail industry flat, fore closures are still on the rise, small businesses are failing, nobody can afford health insurance or food, and mass transit sucks at best...so, raise the sales tax, do away with the $400.00 rebate for home owners, cut medicaid and raise the transit fares? Yet wall street blood suckers still get huge bonuses, Bernie Madoffwithotherpeoplesmoney gets to sweat it out in a luxury pent house prison, and where is there any mention of taxing the ultra wealty just a tad more? Oh, and let's not forget the proposed tranit fare hike! Great leader ship skills there Mike. Yes a third term, that should fix everything!

How about stop building parks every 10 blocks by West St. and stop overpaying unionized blue collar workers ? Why go through 4 yrs of med school and 4 yrs of residency when you can make almost the same as police officers and sanitation workers ? Also, I would love some statistics on the number of city workers living on disability.

I HOPE & PRAY all the real NY'ers get out and vote, rally like we did with the presidential election and get SOB out of office before it gets any worse here.

  • NannyState

Just because this guy shits money doesn't mean he should keep shitting all over NY. Time for someone who doesn't care about clothes that cost more than $110.

  • Think2wice

Agreed. I hope the combo of his term-limit killing measures and the current recession put him out of office.

  • JacqueMehoff

anything on taxing the ultra rich AKA his buddies?????

why cut medicaid? how bout cutting tax breaks or eliminating them and let the market decide.

  • Toby von Meistersinger

To start, have some special sports and stadium taxes. It is time to get these leeches to pay up.

  • pal

bloomberg did an excellent job in planning ahead for the city's future. now we have 10,000 homeless families, 10,000 empty luxury condos, two brand new stadiums with lots of luxury boxes, hundreds of millions of dollars that the city laid out to build the stadiums and well over a billion dollars in tax free bonds raised to build them (never mind schools and libraries) and thanks to all of the rezoning for the condos the city has lost tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs due to the industry we lost. he did a great job in planning for our future. i'm glad he wormed his way into running for a third term where he'll spend hundreds of millions of dollars that no other candidate has to spend on his/her campaign.

  • TKaisen

Yeah, it'll really help all the newly unemployed people by making their clothing more expensive. Well-played, douchebag.

  • Kojak

The newly unemployed will have to make do with TJ Max/Marshalls/Conway instead of Macy's and Bloomingdales. Even with tax hikes individuals can still buy clothing, but they'll have to downgrade.

Given the budget crisis, Bloomberg doesn't have much of a choice.

Perhaps if Nanny Bloomberg quit worrying about posting calorie information and reducing salt intake and smoking in bars, he might really be able to do something about the city's financial problems. He should be attracting businesses to the city not worrying if someone might be having a good time.

This man wants a third term, but his leadership has been poor over the last eight years. We need a mayor that can attract businesses to the city that can employee people and get money back into the economy.

  • JMH

When Bloomberg does things to try to attract businesses to the city people bitch about those things too.

  • Brooklynbobby

Well said, Gothampc. Bloomberg is too busy being the city's "mommy." None of my friends or myself have been out drinking since the smoking ban went into effect. We drink and smoke at each other's homes now. That's an awful lot of money not being spent. On every block in my neighborhood there is a brand spanking new condo building. They are all completely empty. He only thinks about the well-to-do, never the common man. Then, if that isn't enough, he votes himself a third term. He has ruined the flavor of this city and needs to go away . . . soon!!!

  • Gothampc

I'm not a smoker, but I never objected to smoking in bars. I figured if I didn't want to deal with the smoke, I could go elsewhere. It only makes sense that people smoke in bars. There is a bar near my apartment and the people line up along the street to smoke. It's just so ass-backward.

  • JacqueMehoff

most bars have that giant smoke eater machine,

it really isn't that bad but some bars mix in

the smoke and the fry grease. no amount of filtration

can get that out of your clothes.

but I miss smoking in bars.

  • chickblao

well a lot of people DON'T like inhaling and having the smoke all over them in bars. because of that, allowing that is unfair, because it's not like you have to smoke. gross.

  • Dirk

Oh boy. Time to bend over and get screwed again.

  • killereyes

Blooomberg will do what he has to do to keep NYC afloat. Believe me, tax hikes and job layoffs would be coming even if it wasn't Bloomberg in office.
