Marty Says Goodbye to the M

We knew it was coming, and this morning Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz held a mock funeral for the M train. Joining him were Daniel Squadron (New York State Senator), Michael Burke (Downtown Brooklyn Partnership), a bagpiper, and Paul Nelson (Assemblywoman Joan Millman's Chief of Staff).

Markowitz stated: “As Brooklyn’s own Woody Allen once said, ‘I don’t want to achieve immortality through my work, I want to achieve it through not dying.' We know the M and the R trains feel the same way. They want to live long and productive lives, and let’s face it, Brooklyn needs them! Our growing population of Downtown Brooklyn residents needs night-time service on the R; and for the M to be denied any entry into Brooklyn — that’s a fate worse than death! Long live the M and R!” Everything else you missed can be found after the jump in what is surely the first funeral up on YouTube. But where was the R's flower wreath?

Flip that wreath over to read "W" and then let's just bury the bastard quickly.

FYI: Prozac helps alleviate the symptoms of BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome)

The stretch between Myrtle Avenue and Metropolitan will always be there.

I suppose Queens doesn't count for Marty.

I'd never seen a blue, velvet bagpipe before. That worries me.

The guy with the sequined kilt and pink patent leather bagpipes must have been booked.

As political theatre goes, "Marky Mark" Markowitz delivers the monkey with a tin cup version.

Technically its German, they were settled in the buswick/ridgewood area when the line first opened.

The M train was totally useless in Brooklyn. It ran along the N line into Manhattan in the morning (from the Coney Island railyards). People would let it pass while waiting the the N. At night it would run along the D line as far as Bay Parkway. Nobody got on it then either.
