Mind the Gap: New South Ferry Station Opening Delayed

Those images of the new South Ferry subway terminal will have to tantalize us for another few months: The new station, which was supposed to open this month, needs a little more work because, the NY Times reports, "the gap between the platform and the trains exceeds the three-inch maximum allowed by federal regulations guaranteeing access to mass transit to people with disabilities."

According to the MTA, the excess gap is 0.04 of an inch to "about an inch" along the platform. The MTA is getting new rubbing boards (the panels on the side of the platform) made and will need to install them. When our own Joe Schumacher, at the old South Ferry station last week, asked an MTA employee when the new station would open, the employee hesitated and then said, "April."

This is a problem, but the gap on the LIRR platforms meet federal regulations??

The regulation only applies when you build or rebuild a station.

It isn't unusual at all to have to adjust a platform on a curve.

Oops! Way to engineer a project MTA. Just stick some rubber and glue in the crack and all will be fine.

Hahaha the whole point of the new station was to get rid of the gaps created by the curve of the old station. They realize the month they're supposed to open that there's too big of a gap?

'excess gap is 0.04 of an inch to "about an inch" along the platform'

Good Lord... An entire inch. The Midget/Leprechaun population will be livid.

How about this? Tell people to step OVER the gap. I hear that works. Though I understand why the MTA needs to fix this to avoid liability issues from dumbasses who don't know how to 'Mind the Gap'.

It has nothing to do with liability. The regulation says 3 inches. The regulation is for people who can't step over the gap... because they use a wheelchair.

This project is clearly cursed! I've waited more than 8 years for this damn thing to be completed (yes, I know the station itself has only been under construction for like 5, but the whole South Ferry complex has been a mess since the day I moved here!), but now I can't say I'm entirely anxious to utilize it (providing it does in fact actually open someday). Then again, the current station is a deathtrap too, so I guess it can't be much worse.
