The Post Continues War Against Feathered Enemies

2009_01_homesully.jpg The NY Post, which proclaimed "PLUCK 'EM" to Canada geese after an apparent bird strike forced US Airways Flight 1549 to land in the Hudson River, is now angry at cab drivers for feeding birds at area airports.

One driver says, "Some guys who don't eat their roll or bread just feed it all to the birds. Giant seagulls, pigeons and geese swoop down." Another says, "Sometimes, guys eat their lunch and just toss out the bag in the lot between taxi cabs," this in spite of a sign that tells drivers not to feed birds. Wait, we thought the real scourge were people who fed the stray cats at JFK Airport! While blame clearly must be assigned, City Councilman David Weprin and State Senators Eric Adams and Hiram Monserrate offered ideas to limit the geese population (including "oiling unhatched eggs [to] prevent them from hatching...pouring gravel over fields [to] keep many from returning" and shooting them).

And on Saturday, a JetBlue Airbus A320—the same type of plane as Flight 1549—aborted its takeoff from Orlando International after, the AP reports, "after the crew thought it hit a flock of birds, and an investigation has found damage to one engine consistent with a bird strike." That flight never left the runway, so no Sully is My Homeboy type shirts were needed.

So, the real problem here involves people who litter. Don't litter, people.
