Baker Now Apologizes for "Drunken Negro Face" Cookies

2009_01_bake.jpg After the controversy over the "Drunken Negro Face" cookies he claimed were in honor of President Obama, Lafayette French Pastry proprietor Ted Kefalinos has finally apologized. He told the Daily News, "I'm sorry that people were offended by the cookie. We were just trying to make a large number of people happy, and instead we made a large number of people confused and angry."

The cookie crumbled after customers at the Greenwich Village bakery told My Fox NY's Arnold Diaz about the offensive treats—and how Kefalinos allegedly said, "They're in honor of our new president. He's following in the same path of Abraham Lincoln; he will get his." Kefalinos denied the cookies were racist. When we spoke to him, he explained, "This whole thing was blown out of proportion," and said of the word "negro," "It's a French word. It comes from the French."

My Fox NY headed to the bakery for a follow-up, where Kefalinos played messages left on his answering machine—some were telling him the cookies were offensive while others were more serious threats (one mentioned burning his store down. Video below:

Kefalinos told My Fox NY, "Seriously, from the bottom of my heart, it was an innocent design I created. It was nothing more than just a piece of art." Also, the NYPD is aware of the threats made to Kefalinos, who is now recording all his phone calls.

This is no worse than pissing on a crucifix or covering the Virgin Mary in elephant dung, but because those actions are backed by liberal Democrats, they are called "art" and deemed OK. In fact, the so-called "art" is much worse, because at least the cookies aren't taxpayer funded.

  • robingee

There never was a Virgin Mary "covered in dung" - it was a painting by an artist of African descent who used elephant dung in many of his works. This just happened to be a painting of a woman with one breast formed from the dung and the title was Virgin Mary.

  • NannyState

It would be funny if the dumbass started by trying to make a cookie that looked like Obama to cash in on the new president but was so talentless that his cookie looked like crap so he went with the "drunken negro" theme. Colossal FAIL.

  • tingo

This guy's business could be gone soon thanks to this Darwin-worthy marketing effort.

But the talk about 'burning the place down' is insane. Seriously, that puts everyone in that building at risk, including firefighters. That should never be said - even in passing or as a figure of speech. Some crazyhead might get the wrong idea. Seriously - business will dry up and this guy will have to reopen somewhere where people still make their own jerky and live in underground shelters. That is punishment enough, if that's what you're looking for.

  • bubka

Now he should come out with a harmonious black-and-white cookie

  • snessnyc

The really sad thing is, that with his "innocent mistake" and "gee-I'm sorry-if-I-offended-anyone" apology, he has gotten more publicity than he could possibly buy. Free publicity for a luxury item in tough economic times? Priceless.

  • dr zippy

For what it's worth I walked by yesterday afternoon and there were no customers inside. Maybe the free publicity isn't working out.

  • freddynyc

The guy's looks and demeanor is enough to merit a good beating...

  • blablanyc

Ted and Don Imus wear the same N-----r Hatin' Hat. What an a-hole.

  • Guest

I hope he amends his actions and stays in business.

    A Modest Proposal:

Will all the Politically Correctoids on Gothamist express the same moral outrage on March 17th by boycotting all the stationery stores in the city that sell racist caricature postcards of Drunken Irish Men?

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Thefacsts, the Irish carriage driver. I will boycott those cards if you stop abusing those poor carriage horses.

  • valeriob

Are you still talking about freaking horses?

  • widefive

I guess it is hurting his business. I hope he goes under.

  • Lautaro

Am I the only loyal Gothamist reader who's really annoyed by these psuedo-apologies people make whenever they're caught in the media spotlight? I don't want to get all George Costanza here, but I don't think that was technically an apology. He said he's sorry that people got offended. That's not an apology for what he said, but for how people took it, which is b.s. Individuals always do this; they apologize for the reaction to their comments/actions, and not for the acts themselves.

And, Arnie Diaz is the Charles Oakley of 't.v. gotcha journalism.'

  • Ukobserver

Of course this wasn't an apology!!!

The simple fact that he said "I'm sorry that people were offended by the cookie" proves it.

If he had said "I'm sorry if l caused offence" THAT would have been a real apology.

  • aspiringrapper

What's the French word for kicking this imbecile's ass?

  • PoliteNewYorker

Has anyone tasted one? That is the real test of any cookie. Someone please tell me that with all of this hullabaloo, someone tasted this cookie and can report on how it tastes. I don't care if the cookie is named 'Flag-burning Al Qaeda face KKK child molester crotch' - if it tastes good, I'll eat the fucking thing.

  • ixvnyc

    You are banned.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

what about the guy who made Obama is my slave t-shirts. that was offensive.

  • interlard

I wonder if a white-faced cookie would have been seen as offensive.

  • asg749d

People are so full of s!@#

Why can't people accept the fact that ignorance and lack of common sense runs rampant in the population. Just don't buy the cookie, and when the baker realizes that they are not selling, he will have no option but to retire them and move on to something else.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

In regards to those threats, ted is recording his calls. what about his belief on "expression of freedom", i guess it only applies to him. Also what is the deal with the Miami cap? Did his Cuban brother-in-law give it to him?

  • NannyState

Nothin' says lovin' like ignorance in the oven.

  • JacqueMehoff

actually, I'm waiting for his supporters. you know they'll be at least one guy with a sign supporting him.

I can see some sites organizing it already, how many will show up is another issue. All they need is Rush to pick up on this.

  • CR

Agreed - he'll be out of business by Spring. At this point he's pissed off enough people. This kind of thing might work in Astoria or out on Long Island - but the West Village?

  • csk

    Is he Greek? Figures...

Youse mean dat baykah man putted two 'n two...togethuh?

    WhataGENIUS!.

  • Steve Cruz

Death and destruction threats are out of line and illegal.

The cookie was an "innocent work of art." Someone should tell this dope that an apology plus an explanation equals no apology.

I think most people have the right idea to skip the place and take their dollars somewhere else. In a city like New York and a neighborhood like Chelsea, there must be dozens of fine alternatives. And I'm sure that whomever reopens the bakery after he loses it will be able to attract local business again.

Baked goods in bad taste: I wouldn't go there.

  • malebranche99

Nice try fellows, but I was referring to the series of comments made by Ides ever since this story broke. They have consisently critized people's outrage over this baker's idiocy.

    Unsurprising.

Just read his past comments and the pattern becomes laughably obvious.

    But really, cute try though.

Agree with Matty though, the market will do away with him faster than any fire could.

  • ides_of_march

Your personal fixation on me is creepy to say the least. Could you please obsess over somebody else?

  • malebranche99

Chill out Ides, what looks to you like a fixation is actually morbd fascination. I find your ideas mostly repellent. But they're completely safe from me, I'd never touch them.

For once you're right though, I'd be better off not even looking.

  • malebranche99

Fascinating how Ides can so consisently stand on the wrong side of every issue...ever. It's almost like a superpower. Is he a comic book villain? Maybe the real Archie Bunker? Is he made of antimatter or is he a genuinely, kindly practitioner of a philosophical ju-jitsu so convoluted that human minds simply cannot understand it?

"people demonstrate their moral superiority and tolerance" - Who claims to be completely tolerant? That tired taunt is a republican conceit. There is a lot that a lot of us won't tolerate, racism is one of them.

He has the right to bake his stupid cookies and we have the right, not to threaten him but, to tell him to go f**k himself.

  • fakenewyorker

he's either a huge attention whore, or an employee of gothamist trying to bate liberal new yorkers to comment on this site's stories.

  • ides_of_march

Try reading what people write instead of reading INTO it what's not there.

  • RatherBeBiking

You don't have to pretend to be afraid - we both know you masturbate to the idea of someone truly caring what you think.

  • longacre

Mr. Ides was clearly referring to the people who did in fact threaten the baker's life, not the people who simply expressed non-violent outrage. Clearly the baker is a moron, but the people who threatened to burn his store down and made anti-Greek and anti-White comments are just as moronic as him.

  • matty

Eh. The market will sort it out - it doesn't discriminate. He'll be closed by spring.

    Fuckhead.

  • freddynyc

Just look and listen to this guy - I think he carries an extra chromosome...

  • fakenewyorker

You people getting angry over people getting angry over a racist cookie, you guys are the real losers.

But I have to say, that cookie bears a striking resemblance to Beetlejuice.

  • JacqueMehoff

ain't that the truth, like the staunch pro lifers who actually did bomb or murder someone.

    PC is a disease alright.

  • ides_of_march

I love how people demonstrate their moral superiority and tolerance by threatening violence. Political correctness is a mental disease.

  • thefacts

Death threats and burning down a store over a cookie? Sik fux.

  • RatherBeBiking

Death threats & threats of burning it down, not actually doing it. Word your comment more clearly.

  • Steve Cruz

I guess there are small minds on both sides of the issue.

Someone teach this tasteless baker that an apology with an excuse equals no apology. He doesn't regret that he created something offensive. He's an artist, the Drunken N-gg-r cookies were designed to make people happy (how could I miss that?). He's sorry that people had a bad reaction.

Is he out of business yet?

  • thefacts

    Whatever you say, professor.

And make sure you include verbs in your sentences when you correct others, my dear pedant.

  • RatherBeBiking

    No.
