Paterson Makes It Official: Meet Senator Kirsten Gillibrand

Governor Paterson introduced his long-awaited pick to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate seat, upstate Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand. Politicker NY reports Gillibrand said, "I realize that for many New Yorkers, this is the first time you've heard my name and you don't know much about me. But I assure you that over the next few years, you will get to know me, and I will get to know you."

Surrounded by fellow Congressional members and other lawmakers —Assembly Sheldon Silver, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith and Senator Charles Schumer—Gillibrand graciously thanked Paterson and acknowledged her family, friends and many colleagues, including Representative Carolyn McCarthy who voiced criticism of her yesterday (she said she would work with McCarthy on McCarthy's gun legislation), as Andrew Cuomo, her former boss at HUD and her predecessor (Paterson's and Gillibrand's full remarks at City Room):

Perhaps most significantly, I look to Secretary of State Clinton, whose seat Governor Paterson has now entrusted me, with great humility. … She has personally inspired me to action. … When she was first lady, she stood before thousands of people in Beijing and bravely called the world to action to recognize that women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights. I, too, on that day heard her call.
Schumer called the selection of Gillibrand an "outstanding choice.. She will be, I know, a great Senator, a great partner, a great colleague." Schumer also referred to how Hillary Clinton embarked on an "upstate listening tour" when she first ran for Senate and said Gillibrand would go on a downstate listening tour—"Bayside and Bay Ridge! Washington Heights!"—adding that he believed her views on gun issues would evolve, just as his views on farming had changed. Also, while Schumer was speaking, President Obama called to offer his congratulations to Gillibrand.

Paterson claimed, "This was not based on gender, geographic location, of race, religion or sexual orientation." When asked by the NY Post's Fred Dicker if the choice wasn't about gender or geography, why did he pick a woman from upstate over more senior politicians, like Carolyn Maloney, Paterson—who said Andrew Cuomo was "ebullient" over Gillibrand— answered that Gillibrand has an incredible command of many issues, noting that she skillfully defended her voting against the financial bailout packages, and managed to win a very Republican district twice. And he also professed regret, when asked about the tortured selection process, for letting people see the "wrestling match" —essentially saying he let the process be too transparent to the public.

There will be a special election in 2010 for the Senate seat, and then the seat goes up for grabs again in 2012 (Clinton was re-elected in 2006). And SUNY New Paltz poli sci professor Gerald Benjamin says the new Senator, "She has potential Sarah Palin pizazz and energy from a different, more moderate and informed starting point, and without the negatives."

Hey Ides, you're eating some shit right now re:your comments about Patterson the other day.

"This was not based on gender"

mhmm

she's way cuter than that skeleton lady we had to keep reading about.

oh no, she is a hunter and pro guns. Damn, another Palin. Blah.

Also, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, which sounded an early alarm on Gillibrand as she was just starting to emerge as a potential frontrunner during the inauguration in Washington, also issued a statement expressing its "disappointment" with her selection by Paterson.

No, Palin was batshit crazy. She believed in jesus lizards and was against abortion rights.
Gillibrand believes in the second amendment, which was created so we can protect our rights. For example the right to choose.

I think she supports the NRA more than she supports the 2nd amendment.

96% of New York State's population is in the metropolitan area of New York City. Why would Paterson choose to have 50% of our Senate representation coming from an area with less than 4% of the population?

To balance out the other parts of the state. There is more to NY than NYC.

Yes, there is more to New York than New York City. The New York City metropolitan area also includes much of Long Island and areas like Westchester. Since 96% of the population lives in this area, a Senator should have been chosen from this area, instead of from a large part of the state where individual rights really don't matter since people live too far apart to interact with one another.

New York DOESN'T NEED MORE GUNS!!! She is a republican in disguise that likes unregulation and tax cuts for the rich. The same policies that have killed our country in the last 2 decades. Patterson is really a blind fool. This is why kids, cocaine use is bad for you and for us. :(

Wow, seven minutes from "Her voting record seems fair. Never hear of her before."

She is a republican in disguise that likes unregulation and tax cuts for the rich.

That's impressive, felixthecat!

i wouldn't make fun of felixthecat, he changed his mind after he did some research.

It's more the cherry picking of what to be angry about. Gillibrand is also pro-abortion rights, for gay marriage and intially voted against the bank bailout. Sometimes the views of politicians don't fit squarely into the little boxes our minds want them to fall into.

I know it seems that Gay marriage is the most important issues to some, but look at Quinn, she is gay and pro-gay marriage and she has cause havoc to our city. She has no ethics and values. Quinn has no respect for the voters and the law. it is also about ethical consistency which Gillibrand isn't.

I'm as suprised as everyone else, especially since it made sense for Paterson to pick Cuomo who will raise plenty of money in 2010 and will no longer be a threat to Paterson re-election bid.

As for Gillibrand, she is a very conservative democrat who won in a very republican district. It makes you wonder if she pulled a "Bloomberg" by running with the other party just beat the incumbent. She prides herself on being fiscally tough and voted against the bail-out when her NY counterparts begged for money. I don't think NY needs a conservative/centrist when the state needs signficant financial help from the Feds.

Further, I understand that there is more to the State than our city, but a Senator should represent the majority rather than a very small population in an area that has different needs than 10 million people.

Wow look at all those a-holes clustered together like that. I bet I could knock 'em all over like bowling pins with a single shoe-toss.
