Last Night's Action: Break Time

  • Rangers 4 Anaheim 2: New York will head into the All-Star Break with a win, and a bit of a hot streak, having won four of their last five games before the break. Tuesday’s game was strange for two reasons. First, the Rangers scored four goals, a prolific output for them. But also because all four goals were scored with the Rangers on a power play or a penalty kill.

Markus Naslund got things going with a power play goal in the first and after Anaheim tied it, Freddy Sjostrum put them ahead again with a shorthanded goal. Anaheim tied it again at the end of the second, but Scott Gomez scored his first power play goal of the season to put them in front for good.

But Dan Girardi took a penalty that gave Anaheim a chance to tie the game on the power play and when they pulled their goalie, they had a six-to-four advantage for the final minutes of the game. It was Blair Bets who made the key play, blocking a shot and depositing the puck into the empty net for the final goal. Betts got the first star of the game and the Rangers will get a week off to rest up for the second half of the season.

  • Tough news for the Islanders: Rick DiPietro will miss the rest of the season as he continues his recovery from knee surgery. Since DiPietro has 12 years left on his contract, the Islanders need to be very careful with him.

Thank you for the last nigh updates as I was travelling couldn't found these anywhere else.

Very tough cross. I like such wonderful outs. But seems good time for Rangers on a power play. I will soon become the fan of Markus Naslund, if he play in same way and struggle.

What's this minor sport with sticks on ice, and why does Gothamist keep covering it??

It involves dudes with sticks who sometimes *fight each other*!

would you prefer more updates on last night's "the city?"

I have seen those "fights", Pro Wrestling is more real. I am sorry to break the news but the NHL is dead.

Pro wrestling is more real?

Perhaps you should tell that to the family of Donald Sanderson, who lapsed into a coma and recently died after a recent hockey fight in an amateur league in Canada. Or maybe tell that to Todd Fedoruk, whose face is held together with titanium plates due to fighting.

Also, hockey viewership is up significantly this year on TV, despite the NHL having a contract with a little-known cable outlet. Bettman may be slowly killing the league but it's not dead yet, thanks to guys like Ovechkin.

Keep covering hockey with all your hearts, Gothamist.

The haters are just sad that the Knicks are terrible and are less relevant than the Rangers... again.

No no no, don't you see? The Knicks are relevant because in a year and a half they might sign LeBron! Everyone should keep watching and hoping that might happen!

Good win for the Rangers against a tough team last night. Loved seeing Betts get the first star for a tremendous effort; in an up-and-down year for the Rangers, the penalty kill has been consistently excellent and he's a huge reason why.

Regarding the Icelanders, that fifteen-year deal they gave DP has to be looking worse and worse all the time, doesn't it?

Geez, hockey is dead? Better tell that to the numbers:

Oh, record attendance for the last two years in a row as well.

Guess we better get the shovels?

Still a minor sport no matter how you spin the numbers. Sorry to offend all Canadian transplants on Gothamist.
