Teen Killed at Bed-Stuy Dance Party

2009_01_teenshb.jpg A 17-year-old teenage girl was fatally shot early yesterday morning when gunfire broke out at a party held at the Elks Plaza on Fulton St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Nyasia Pryear, who was shot in the neck, was an honor student at Nazareth Regional High School and her relatives say she was looking forward to attending college in the fall. Two other teens were injured in the melee.

According to police, over 500 teens attended the dance, which was billed as an alcohol-free event. Witnesses and relatives say that the violence erupted, according to the NY Times, as a "response to a man shouting gang epithets from the stage." Pryear's uncle said, "Bloods and Crips garbage. That’s when the guy who was standing behind my niece started shooting.” The News reports that apparently "Bloods gang members unleashed the violence because they were elbowed out of [the] event on a lucrative holiday weekend."

Pryear's father, Alberto Yard, cried, "They killed my baby! They killed my baby!" while her mother Jennifer Pryear begged for help in finding her killer, "She was a loving child. I just need y'all to just turn yourself in. Why you gotta do this to my baby? She didn't deserve it... She didn't mean to hurt nobody. She was out trying to have a good time, and they killed her like a dog."

I was hoping my son got into Stuyvesant High School. Is it as dangerous as they say?

The solution to gangs is to give the police the right to shoot to kill them on sight. And then leave their bodies in the street. They like violence? Treat them to the real thing.

    Police? I say armed vigilantes.

but yeah, if she was so smart... what was she doing going to a dance party in BED-STUY!?

  • Clarice City

    That comment reeks of ignorance.

  • chickblao

The city should sponsor a free rap concert in Madison Square Garden and allow only gang members. At the door they pass out free handguns and ammo plus coke and angel dust to the first twenty thousand and let them go at it. No snitching allowed. Last man standing gets a customized Escalade.

They've succeeded in scaring me away from this neighborhood.

When you attend a 'dance party' (or allow your children to attend) where the majority of the songs talk about packing gats and getting shot and the clientele happens to be made of gang thugs, chances are, someone's probably going to get shot.

Why do they always aim for the good students?!

  • Clarice City

What a shame. This woman had such a bright future. She did everything right.

Bloomberg needs to eliminate these animals the way Giuliani wiped out the mob.

"I just need y'all to just turn yourself in."

Good luck with that. Does anyone actually think gang members have any sense of right and wrong or that they care about anybody but themselves?
