Jews Against the Occupation Protest Along the Holiday Road

Morning rush hour drivers along the BQE this morning encountered a series of signs protesting the occupation of Gaza and what is seen as Israeli war crimes hung by the group Jews Against the Occupation. Signs such as "FREE GAZA" and "JEWS SAY: STOP ISRAEL" were draped from overpasses as commuters headed southbound along the highway.

While today may not have been the ideal traffic conditions to allow the message to resonate with drivers, the group saw protesting on the holiday as a symbolic gesture. JATO activist Jacob Kurtzberg said, "Martin Luther King taught that we could not wait for civil rights and equality to be handed to us. In New York and in Palestine, we've learned that can't wait for our governments to object to these wrongs—it's up to us to raise the alarm."

After both sides in the conflict reached a temporary cease fire yesterday, today Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that he hopes that Israeli troops will be withdrawn by the time of tomorrow's inauguration of Barack Obama. JATO says that the cease fire "remains precarious as long as Israel refuses to negotiate with Hamas or lift the siege on Gaza."

that's awesome! yep, exclamation point.

Is it true that the majority of Jews oppose the occupation and it's AIPAC that dictates the belligerent US policy?

The Palestinians asked for the Israelis to leave Gaza, the Israelis did just that. The Palestinians then reciprocated by launching thousands of rockets on Israeli civilians from Gaza. They also infiltrated Israeli territory and abducted Israeli soldiers who have not yet been released.

Whenever Israel has given in to Palestinian demands, the Palestinians have always responded to the olive branch with an escalation of violence. Unfortunately, force is the only language these psychopaths understand.

This is legitimate self defense. The Palestinians have only themselves to blame.

If some asshole stood outside your home and threw rocks through your windows day after day, how long before you went outside and beat the living crap out them?

Another example of the moderate vs the orthodoxy.

no, its an example of justice vs. ignorance. the people who put up those signs either a)don't realize that the israeli attack was a legal, justified act of self defense and protecting its citizens or (b)are Gaza sympathizers who are more concerned with the lives of Palistinians than those of Israelis

i am not saying that the Palistian lives arent important, but as Jews we must support ourselves before supporting our terrorist neigbors

athe sign hangers are still mourning the death of their leader and hero, Josef Stalin.

Blockade? Wall? Apartheid? Segregation? Throw up the excuse of "self defense" and Israel gets carte blanc to massacre Pas many alestinians as possible.
Occupation is maintained by power and money and the US eagerly gives both.
People who blindly support Israel are part of the problem.

I think the situation is very complicated, and emotionally charged.

The situation is very emotionally charged and will not see an end in any of our lifetimes. Unless both parties are obliterated. Which is the only way to get them to stop fighting.

It's nice to see that people's opinions don't have to only be linked to their religion or heritage.

It's a real shame that some people think that, if there's someone outside your house throwing bricks through your windows, you have the right to kill their whole family.

Only an end to the tit-for-tat violence will bring peace. If only the international community would stop taking sides, like some commenters here did, they could pressure both Israel and Hamas into living in peace.

It's like bombing Brooklyn to get rid of the mob.
