Caroline Kennedy, Senator-to-be?

2009_01_carok1.jpg While the weekend brought stories of Governor Paterson perhaps changing his mind about who will replace Hillary Clinton as the junior Senator from New York—a Daily News source said, "He was leaning toward one person, but he has shifted to another"—the Post suggests the decision is a done deal... and that Caroline Kennedy will be the victor.

Post Albany Bureau Chief Fred Dicker writes, "Several unhappy contenders for the job have told friends and associates in recent days" that Paterson is "certain" to pick Kennedy, the non-politician. Apparently Paterson was concerned that not picking Kennedy would "greatly embarrass" and "entirely humiliate" her, as well as "anger her prominent political family and even offend President-elect Barack Obama." Apparently Attorney General Andrew Cuomo isn't making the cut because it's unclear if Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver would pick an "acceptable" successor for the AG job.

One would-be contender bitterly told the Post, "It's been a done deal from the start. David goes with Caroline with the understanding that Caroline, and her family and its resources, go with David next year. This stuff with Paterson saying he's looking at other people is a crock." Dicker also credits Wayne Barrett's Village Voice article from last week that illustrates the Mayor Bloomberg-connection. Barrett wrote, "Bloomberg's strategy: to box Paterson in again, just as he did on term limits, by offering up an irresistible choice...Paterson's acquiescence on term limits convinced the Bloomberg camp to use Kennedy to seal their growing alliance with the governor as well. "

The NY Times has a front page (page A1) article about Kennedy's work ethic as a private person with a very public name—someone who goes to under-the-media radar events honoring real New Yorkers and someone without a sense of entitlement. And an Obama administration source tells the News today, "We want Caroline. [But] We won't indicate disappointment with where he ends up."

Maybe it's just me, but today's Times article felt like something to reassure NYers about Kennedy's appointment.

You're correct. Perhaps you are now realizing that the NY Times is nothing but the unofficial public relations department of the democrat party.

I think it's a last-ditch effort by Caroline's BF to elbow Governor Paterson into appointing Her Vapidness. There's also a story in today's NY Post that says it's a done deal. One of the stories actually said that the Governor doesn't want to hurt Caroline's feelings by turning her down. She'll never stop playing the Orphan Card -- never. I hope it doesn't work in 2010, when we throw both her and Paterson out on their hineys.

you know, it would be really nice to, umm, you know, have the new york senate seat viewed as a position open to merit and not, you know, a reserve for inarticulate, ummm, rich plutocrats and that umm, you know, david paterson wasn't a, umm, you know, political whore...

Let's hope she surprises us. In a good way.

The only surprise now, would be the Governor coming to his senses and appointing the most qualified person.

Great. Now who's going to manage the Kennedy's fried chicken business?

The democrats have the nerve to question the qualifications of a working-class, self-made woman like Sarah Palin then seriously consider appointing this spoiled debutante who never held a real job and speaks like a glue-sniffing valley girl despite a first class ivy league education.

Well, there are plenty of Democrats—and reporters— questioning Kennedy's qualifications. It's just suspected that the invisible hand of patronage is working overtime.

Patronage indeed. Obama is pushing Paterson to nominate her to pay back Teddy Kennedy for his support during the primaries against Hillary. Quid pro quo.

Bloomberg is buying up the election. Michael Bloomberg donated $1.2 million to the Independence Party. It's co-founder, Tom Golisano, no longer has a problem with Bloomberg's third term.

A check for $500,000 came one day after Golisano spoke out against Bloomberg's term-limits extension.

I had no problem with Caroline except that Bloomberg supports her so I kind of wonder if she is ethical. Andrew Cuomo is corrupt and his whole family was involved in the HUD scandal

I agree, the Cuomos are corrupt. Also, Bloomberg's habit of tossing money around is disturbing. When he first ran for office, I liked the fact he was a self-made man and his wealth put him above petty corruption. Apparently, now that he's had a taste of power outside of running his own company, he's determined not to give it up and willing to buy his way back up the power structure.

We need torches and pitch forks to drive Bloomberg out. Democracy should not be bought and sold. Bloomberg turn this city democracy into an oligarchy of old rich billionaires.

Once again, Upstate gets frozen out by the shenanigans of Downstate sub-national politicos on another mission to back the Kennedy Crown. From the hillsides will be raised an army...

So after she is appointed by Patterson, what bridge will he spend $4 million naming after her?

I hope he does appoint her... there's no better way to get both of those idiots out of NY politics. He appoints an inexperienced, inarticulate woman based on her last name and the favors her family did to get Obama elected (hello? talk about paying for a senate seat), among some of the other more assinine things he's proposed (fat tax anyone?) and both of them will be ridden out of town by NYers with voting power in the next election (if Paterson even makes it that far... I'm sure there's a scandal waiting in the wings somewhere).
