Israel and Hamas Both Call for One-Week Cease Fire

Both sides in the three-week long Gaza conflict have agreed to come to a temporary cease fire that began just earlier today. After Israel called off attacks at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Hamas followed suit around twelve hours later, agreeing to a one-week truce. Now Egypt will step forward and continue their role as mediator in an attempt to bring forth a longer-term deal between the two sides.

The next step now is a summit alongside European and Arab leaders gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheik. In order to for a lasting peace, Hamas would like to see the opening of the crossings on Gaza’s borders. Israel wants weapons to stop being smuggled into Gaza across the Egyptian border.

Israel's troops are staying in place as negotiations move forward. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stated last night, “We have reached all the goals of the war, and beyond." Israel made it clear that they will respond to any subsequent attacks.

There have been over 1,000 casualties since the fighting began. Large areas in Gaza remain without basic services like potable water and electricity. Since the conflict began, there have been a number of protests and rallies in the streets of New York.

You mean a one week cease-fire where Hamas continues to fire rockets into Israel? Same as it ever was.

did you read page 6 of this qassamcount? It clearly shows an extreme reduction in missiles fired during the previous cease fire.

just look at the data, it contradicts your assertion.

then when israel broke the cease fire in november, claiming to hit an underground tunnel the rockets started again.

no matter who you think broke the ceasefire in november, saying that hamas continues to fire rockets during ceasefires isn't backed up by the data.

I think he was joking.

However, I thought the "roadmap" for peace was about the Palestinians having their own country. How does firing rockets into Israel achieve that exactly? It would appear that all it does is get a lot of your own civilians killed. Does Hamas actually care about the Palestinian people, or are they just using them?

Apparently I just answered my own question. Whoops. I meant to respond to guavas7 above.

what a cute little qassam count, you idiot. what is the point of counting israeli casualties, there are humans dying on both sides, and if you are going to count, there is over a thousand who died on gazas side and the sicko israelis hardly anyones died.

so your qassam count proves no point.

all these americans support israel blindly just cause they're jewish. how ugly and sad.

all these americans support israel blindly just cause they're jewish. how ugly and sad.

If it's enough reason for Hamas to hate them and want to eradicate them, it should be enough reason to support them.

i think the war will prove to have been a success, and the palestinians will now like the israelis, and behave themselves. hooray, and well done!

#4 - Thank you for the moral equivalency.

"all these americans support israel blindly just cause they're jewish." - And a little Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism thrown in for good measure!

"all these americans support israel blindly just cause they're jewish. how ugly and sad."

and complex thoughts are too difficult for small brains to comprehend so they must make unilateral assumptions about anyone who disagrees with them

the real victims are the palestinian people. neither israel nor hamas gives a shit about the palestinians.

"Does Hamas actually care about the Palestinian people, or are they just using them?"
We all know the answer.

What an angry little person you are. I look at your post history and it seems every post has you calling people names like animal, stupid or idiot and using words like hell, shit and fuck. The only time you weren't upset was for the shoplifter story that you seemed to enjoy. You're the one that's ugly and sad.

That, by the way, was directed at chickblao, but somehow misdirected by this wonderful MovableType update.

how could i be ugly i'm not a mouse like you. and you obviously skipped over my response to the stabbings after the biggie movie - i was arguing against the racism, etc. that is not a sad man, now is it mr. 76? that's right, my little cocoon. you see, the sick terrorist government and their mice are destroyers and invaders, and not one person on this earth should ever choose one side over another, because neither is right.

The only thing Arabs do better than Israelis is kill other Arabs.

"The only thing Arabs do better than Israelis is kill other Arabs."

Ding ding - we have a winner.

"1970: King Hussein of Jordan ordered the indiscriminate bombing of Palestinian refugee camps in the course of putting down the Palestinian uprising during "Black September." This left between 3,000 and 5,000 Palestinian refugees dead."

reaction from chomskyites & zinnites: BUPKIS

"... more than two decades ago Abu Iyad, the number two man in the PLO, publicly stated that the crimes of the Syrian government against the Palestinian people "surpassed those of the Israeli enemy." While in the wake of the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, Kuwaitis not only set about punishing the PLO for support of Saddam Hussein's brutal occupation by cutting off their financial support for Yasir Arafat's overblown and corrupt organization, but there was also a widespread slaughter of Palestinians living in Kuwait.

This revenge against innocent Palestinian workers in the emirate was so severe that Arafat himself acknowledged: "What Kuwait did to the Palestinian people is worse than what has been done by Israel to Palestinians in the occupied territories." Yet there was no media coverage or specially convened UN meetings because it is only when they interact with Israel that the Palestinians win the world's attention."

My question is what comes after this ceasefire? More war? Are they waiting for Hillary to show up and talk to both sides? At the end of the day, Israel will have only dented Hamas while Hamas will declare victory because they survived, just like Hezbollah in Lebanon, and find new leadership to pursue business as usual. And I don't think Hillary will talk to them. I know rockets were fired into Israel but the whole thing seems pointless.

"My question is what comes after this ceasefire?"

Another 5,000 years of two tribes fighting over the same piece of mediocre land.

Cease-fire; in Arabic that means "crap, we're out of ammo, time to re-arm."

"cease fire = rearming" + time out to celebrate Hussein's victory...
