Guess that new location in the old Tower Records by Lincoln Center didn't work out. After closing 20% of its stores (including 3 in NYC) filing for Chapter 11 last fall, Circuit City has now hired four liquidators to help sell the inventory of its remaining 567 stores nationwide. Acting CEO James A. Marcum said, "We are extremely disappointed by this outcome. The company had been in continuous negotiations regarding a going-concern transaction. Regrettably for the more than 30,000 employees of Circuit City and our loyal customers, we were unable to reach an agreement with our creditors and lenders.” Bloomberg News reports that CC lost market share to Best Buy and Wal-Mart, plus Amazon.com and other online retailers undercut its prices.

Uh. So much for my extended warranty on my camera and my tiny HDTV, then, right?
Aren't most extended warranties administered by a third party?
I blame the song on their commercials.
They have no one to blame but themselves... worst customer service of any retail chain in the country period.
AGREED! They completely deserve it. They were bad when their people worked on commission and they're worse now that they don't. Good riddance!
this is fucked up cause now Best Buy doesn't have any Brick and Mortar competition. Sure, people buy stuff on the internet but how do you buy it if you've never reconned the stuff at CC or BB. If I were a Brick and Mortar store I would have charged admission like Costco. Less competition is bad for all of us. It's like the Knicks. No competition from another NY basketball club makes them complacent dicks!
They were really nice to me, I had no problem with their customer service!
No surprise they're going the way of the dodo bird. Everything there was overpriced and their customer service was terrible.
Hm, I used their bathroom once.
I still don't understand why Circuit City spent a considerable amount of money to lease the old Tower Records location despite the fact that the franchise has been struggling for a couple of years and the presence of the new three floor Best Buy a couple of blocks away and another Circuit City near W80th Street. I guess bad business decisions is the reason why they're forced to liquidate.
As far as Circuit City's prices, they were willing to beat any competitor's prices as long as you show proof (i.e. a circular or interest listing). Their employees were disinterested in helping customers, but the same can be said about 100 other stores.
its too bad, they always price matched, gave me pretty good service, no issues with returns and they didnt have restocking fees like bestbuy.
Bring back Crazy Eddies!
Hell, bring back Tower Records!
Oh -- never mind . . .
Dick Lewis is watching and saw this coming..
I've never had a problem with the customer service at Circuit Citys out of town. It's only when I try to shop at the stores in the city that I run into lazy, uninterested, and rude employees. Let's face it, that's just the nature of the minimum-wage/educationally challenged workforce in NYC.
Best Buy is really all alone in the playing field now. They have almost zero competition from other Brick and Mortar stores. People only go to the brick and mortar stores to check out the stuff then go online and order it for tax free and at a cheaper price.
Is there any reason why Best Buy did better than CC?
better color scheme?
You can always try P.C. Richard.
Best Buy especially the Chelsea store has better service. their upper west side story is not so great in service but has more products on the shelves. I think Circuit City has a lot of unknowledgeable staff and sometimes rude as well. Also Best buy often beat Circuit city prices more than circuit city beat Best buy prices.
I passed by CC yesterday for some markdown items due to CC liquidation but there were no markdown items yet.
Damn, my 3-year-old loves riding the escalators at that store on Bway and 80th. Then I compare the pictures on HDTVs so I can go home and find the best bargains online. I can't understand why they'd go out of business.
Yes. They are almost all third party.
Either CC didn't pay their employees enough to give a sh-t about customer service or CC hired people who didn't give a sh-t about customer service.
As others have said, the store's only good purpose was to see stuff in person before buying online for less.
CC management decided some time ago to get rid of their senior sales staff for cheaper, inexperienced sales staff. Now we see the results.
They have been bankrupt before.
Maybe they will reorganize.
I hate "Best Buy" because leaving that
store is like leaving Riker's Island jail
security, Screw 'em Circuit City was less
likely to think you were a shoplifter when
exiting.
Of course, because they use the clear shopping bags I hate. Why do I want everyone outside to know what I got at CC?
On the positive side I liked buying from CC online. It was easy and the purchases were always ready for pickup in 24 minutes or I got....I don't even remember if it was a gift card if it wasn't ready because it always was. The website let anyone say almost anything about the merchandise.
It was like quick self-serve Amazon.com without UPS, plus sales tax.
"Loyal customers"?
They're in a retail sector with zero margins on items that customers expect to pay bottom dollar for due to all the competition. Add to this the fact that they famously fired all their overpaid, knowlegable staff, and let's face it, they didn't stand a chance. The family that founded Circuit City as well as Best Catalog Showroom used to collect modern art and often bartered their merchandise for Warhols, etc. which they trucked back home to Richmond Va. At the end of the day, they would have been better off rolling cigarettes.
J&R is, by far the best electronics store in NYC. They price match and have very knowledgeable sales staff. CC was terrible.
