Cops Stabbed in Queens, One May Lose Eye

2009_01_posta.jpg A number of cops were injured when responding to calls about an emotionally disturbed man on Collier Avenue in Queens. According to the Daily News, "Sgt. Timothy Smith, 35, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after being sliced under the left eye with a switchblade." The cops were trying to subdue Meil Perreira, who was charged at them with a hunting knife. He tried to escape and Smith apparently fired a Taser after him, but Perreira still managed to slash Smith in the face and two others officers in the hand (a fourth was bitten). 1010 WINS learns doctors "are unsure if they will be able to save the [Smith]'s eye."

They should put something in the meds that if you stop them you die within twenty four hours.

I'm glad all you smug commenters above are satisfied with your strawmen... but I don't think anyone would consider it an improper shooting when you charge at a cop with a knife. This is nothing like the lightbulb incident.

Smith's father works at my company. So sad :(

  • JacqueMehoff

    oh, he dead, a-hole

he didn't even leave a note like shane vendrell.

how is anything relevent? like where's Al sharpton?

  • Rocknrope

    Nice Shield reference.

  • JacqueMehoff

how's that other cop doing? the one who shot his wife TWICE in the head.

  • UnrepentantFenian

    How is that relevant? Dickface.

  • Billiamsburg

Poor cop. Can't win. Either he's a 'monster' because he shoots the wild lunatic dead and has Sharpton hounding him day and night trying to guilt him into suicide, or he has to let some savage take his eye out.

  • UnrepentantFenian

    Finally! Someone gets it!

  • MFer

Suppose the cop shot him dead. Fat Al would be out there stinking it up. I'm glad we all agree.

This is a perfect example of why it is inappropriate to use a Taser when a subject is armed with any sort of weapon. Tasers are not a good substitute for deadly force in this type of situation. This subject should absolutely have been shot when he charged the officers with a knife.

  • Kyle T

I wonder if the cops knew that he had a knife. If so, I am very surprised they only used the taser. Deadly force usually meets deadly force.

are these people off their med because of cuts in the economy? no health ins due to job loss, cuts in services or the just let out of jail from Giuliani's arrest everyone campaign?

  • UnrepentantFenian

The sergeant should have waited for ESU to come and bag him.

  • citizenerased

Yeah I thought it was NYPD procedure to kill people in this situation.

Oh well, guess we're back to bad news.

  • Rocknrope

For all of you who didn't understand why cops shoot EDP's who are brandishing weapons, this is what happens when you try to 'subdue' them.
