Nets May Play Pre-Season Games in Newark

2009_01_prucenter.jpg Hey, New York Magazine's words "If you like Downtown Brooklyn you'll love Newark" are totally true when it comes to the NJ Nets. The team, which was supposed to move to Brooklyn for the 2009-2010 way back when, has been negotiating with the NJ Devils to play three pre-season games, according to the Star-Ledger. Nets CEO Brett Yormark only said, "We're exploring many different options, continue to regionalize the franchise. Preseason games afford us the opportunity to do this." An anonymous Nets official adds, "With Brooklyn still up in the air, the question is whether they're warming to the idea of moving to Newark, even though it's clear that getting to Brooklyn is best for the long-term health of the franchise." Over the weekend, City Councilwoman Letitia James told the Daily News the Atlantic Yards project was on its "last legs, and the wicked witch is almost dead" (she opposes the plan), but we bet Bruce Ratner loves zombies.

New Jersey is where the Nets were founded and that is where they should stay. The last time they moved over the Hudson, them moved back. They just need to stay there.

    Gotta love Tish James.

The Pru Center is a quick cheap PATH train ride away. and is the premier sports venue in the country right now. It's also very affordable. We especially love the draft Stella @ $8 and the "Taste of Newark" (Brazilian anyone?) when we're over there rooting for the Devils.

  • I was taking the NJ Transit a few weeks ago and was surprised how close it is to public transit. It looks really great—if the Nets moved to Newark, I'd totally go.

A move to Newark may actually put more fans in the seats. The Prudential Center is accessible by public transportation and isn't a dump like the Izod/Continental Airlines/ Brendan Byrne Arena... No one gives a shit about the Nets in Brooklyn.

also, I very much disagree that Brooklyn is good for the long-term health of the franchise

wouldn't a Nets official say "we" instead of "they"?
