Hillary Clinton's Confirmation Hearings Begin

2009_01_clinchel.jpg Secretary of State-desginate Hillary Clinton is sitting in front of the Senate Foreign Committee, chaired by Senator John Kerry, for her confirmation hearings. Below, we have a live video stream, via MSNBC, of the hearings.

Senator Charles Schumer introduced Clinton—saying he knew she will be a "brilliant Secretary of State"—but not before Kerrey acknowledged how Chelsea Clinton was present and that her mother had wished she could see her during hearings. (Kerry invited Chelsea to sit on the dais, as a quasi-intern.)

Side note: There's a lot of congratulating Kerry on his ascension to Foreign Relations Committee chair; Biden vacated the chairmanship. Besides joking about his own presidential (and even Secretary of State) ambitions, Kerry said of Clinton as Secretary of State, "America is back."

Kerry invited Chelsea to sit on the dais, as a quasi-intern.

If you're Chelsea Clinton, what's the first thing you think of when you hear the word "intern"?

I agree! But Kerry framed it as something like, "Since your dad was a Senate intern, maybe you can be an intern for today."

Quasi-intern?

Probably means she doesn't swallow.

a waste of time and money since the fix is in anyway.

"the fix is in" as in Obama picked someone qualified to hold the office?

The hearings are dog and pony show. What do we not know about this woman already?

I don't envy Clinton. She's inheriting a shit pile.

The hearings are just a formality. The only way this will be actually newsworthy is if she doesn't get confirmed.

What is the point of this? Hearing bunch of people talking like idiots.

We hope the President-elect [negotiates] better with Iran [than he had with the Clintons].

Me too!

Chelsea's face looks like a Picasso painting.

it must be wierd to have your entire identity shaped by your parents. Perhaps, she just has to wait it out until she is old enough to be anointed.
