The Times Sq Virgin Megastore opened when I was high school so it sort of lives in my memory as "classic" NYC, a landmark example of a city in the midst of change.
They used to hold concerts with big name bands on the lower floor as promotion. Haven't been there in years (avoid the area like the plague), but I recall there being a very good selection of indie label stuff back in the late '90s. Discovered quite a bit of music listening at those stations.
Oh well, another piece of my adolescence disappears. I guess this is how folks from a generation before felt about Gimbel's shutting down
I always tended to avoid it like the plague, as it seemed to be overpriced and had the handicap of being in Times Square.
If there is any chain record store that I miss it was Tower Records. My DVD set of season two of The Sopranos is the rental copy from the Lincoln Center store and I have a shopping basket from the store in the Village, the last thing I ever bought at Tower for just $2 plus tax.
ucb better control their annoying white connecticut dane cook loving crowd, or i'ma start busting heads when i walk by. ugh.
#2, fans of UCB are fans of comedy. They like to laugh. Therefore, they are not fans of the screaming frat boy schtick from Dane Cook.
yeah, ok. i've been there twice and it was HELL. the crowd was annoying and what i saw onstage was not funny at all. a bunch of people trying way too hard.
Great pic...!
The only thing worse than that Virgin Mega store at that location was the movie theatre in their basement. It was a filthy place. The only other thing worse than the Virgin Megastore, outside the building, is Virgin Atlantic.
