Rickey Henderson, who played for the Yankees and the Mets but is most known for his time with the A's, made it into the Hall of Fame on Monday. The Baseball Writers' Association of America voted him in in his first year of eligibility with 94.8 percent of the vote. Red Sox outfielder Jim Rice also got in with 76.4 percent, just above the required 75-percent threshold. Henderson is the all-time leader in runs and stolen bases and is probably the best leadoff hitter of all time. His career on-base percentage is .401. And it wasn't just patience; Rickey, as he was wont to call himself, hit 297 career homers, including 81 leading off games. He played for the Yankees from 1985 to 1989 and the Mets in 1999 and 2000. When Henderson ran out of steam, he still tried playing for the independent Newark Bears for almost no money out of pure love for the game. He's a worthy admission to Coooperstown.

Rice should have been in YEARS ago. He was a classy player, unlike Henderson.
Henderson, although a dick, was excellent at what he did. Get on base, harass the pitcher and score runs.
Congratulations to both. I'm glad I got to see them both play.
Rice should not be in the HoF, but I tend to have higher standards for the hall than most. I'm happy for Rickey, though.
Fave Rickey quote: "If they want to pay me like Mike Gallego, I’ll play like Gallego."
The only question I have is which 5.2% didn't vote for Rickey and what planet are they on? They should turn in their voting--and procreating--priveleges right away. I'm betting these are the same bums that don't like Manny.
Rice being classy has nothing to do with it. He was entirely a product of the fact that Fenway was massively favorable to hitters in the 1970s; he was barely mediocre on the road. Letting him in is lowering the standards of the Hall.
What?? Rice was a dominant player in his era. He didn't get in all of these years because of the writers playing god with a guy who was bad with the media.
