The Museum of Natural History tried something new this year: an ice skating rink. Opening in November, their Polar Rink is made up of "scientifically engineered" artificial ice which isn't getting very good reviews. One reader tips us off to the dull blades and sub-par synthetic skating surface, declaring ever so bluntly: "the Polar Rink SUCKS BALLS...goddamn it's a piece of crap. The super-dull rental skates don't help (and btw - THERE ARE NO LOCKERS, so you either take your chances with your bag stowed under a bench, or skate with your shit with you.) SUCKS. FAIL. DO NOT WANT." The folks over at Yelp seem to agree, the rink got 7 (of 7) one-star reviews over there (the lowest possible rating), with most complaining focused on the plastic-like surface that makes it impossible to do much more than shuffle around for a few defeating moments.

Went with a group of about 10 on Saturday night. It really does suck balls, 2 of us were kind of able to figure it out, but as soon as someone yells "he can do it" you lose your concentration, think you're ice skating (which you're not) and grind to a halt.
Choice quote of the evening:
"It feels like they just stole $10 from me"
We went to Prospect Park to actually "Ice Skate" the next day just to prove to ourselves that we hadn't all magically forgotten how to skate at the same time.
don't take your own skates. people i know who went said it ruined their blades.
Thanks for the tip!
I wonder why this fake ice sucks balls and the figure skaters in Wintuk, who also skate on fake ice seem to do fine on it.
I went to Wintuk and don't remember any ice skates...
Went there for the first time today, wondering why no one has mentioned the $9 lock rip off, so it actually works this way: you pay $5 to get in, + $7 to rent the skates, and they announce that the "locker" is free, but you have to purchase the lock to actually lock it, - which is $9... Its like one of my friends suggested to purchase tama drum set for my son, but failed to mention that the drum set comes without the drum pedal! - add another $100 right there!!
Um, at least when I was there a week or so ago, that's not at all how it works. $10 (or slightly discounted for students, seniors, and members) gets you admission and rental, but there were no lockers at all. Bryant park has free lockers that require a lock - maybe that's what you meant?
