MulchFest and Mulch Mania!

Don't just toss your tannenbaum out onto the sidewalk; this weekend there are two events designed for the ultimate holiday arboricidal massacre. First up is the city's annual MulchFest, which invites you to bring your tree in to a designated city park (they'll open up shop in all five boroughs), where it will be turned into nourishing mulch. "You are encouraged to bring bags to take advantage of the free mulch" that will be provided at certain sites. More details here.

Next up is Mulch Mania! Brought to you by the Alliance for Downtown New York, the event will "assist Lower Manhattan residents with efforts to recycle their holiday trees for free in an environmentally safe manner." This one isn't citywide, taking place only in Bowling Green Park (MulchFest will be there Saturday too, awkward), and they've even set up a shuttle bus for you and your tree. Along with free mulch, they'll be serving up refreshments as well. Update: The MulchMania people tell us that they and MulchFest are one in the same. But maybe they're just saying that to get more trees! Eco warriors unite for MulchFeud '09!

    I love mulchfest!!

And so many New Yorkers think that you have to spend money to have a good time...Mulchfest is free and, if you drag your tree all the way the park, you even get some excercise.

No. Who the fuck actually lugs their tree to a city park?

It's always annoying that the city makes so much noise about "Mulchfest", yet you gotta really dig to find out when you should put your tree on the curb (like 98% of people will do.) (The answer is that you can leave it on the curb through Jan 16, BTW.)

Perhaps, to facilitate the sucess of Mulchfest, the MTA should allow people to lug their tree onto the subway and take it for a ride to the nearest park?

I mean, people complain about bikes on the train; but who wouldn't appriciate a nice fresh pine scent on the train?

This seems like the event where one should be wasted drunk and have a party while donating your tree to a good cause. It could be the start of a yearly tradition in the city!

    Anyone with me?
