Council Hopeful May Drop Out After Boy's Death

2009_01_ibrqns.jpg After his campaign RV fatally struck a 9-year-old boy walking home from school Tuesday afternoon, the Daily News reports that City Council candidate Michael Ricatto may drop out of the race. Ricatto, who was devastated by Ibrihim Ahmed (pictured)'s death, had suspended his campaign and his spokesman told the News, "We don't know how we're going to move forward." Ricatto had been eyeing newly elected State Senator Joseph Addabbo's Council seat in next month's special election. The RV's driver, Alexander Aponte, was arrested for having a suspended license (due to owing money from car insurance lapse). While some witnesses say Aponte, who remained at the scene, seemed to be trying to beat the light, he will not face charges for Ibrihim's death. Transportation Alternatives issued a statement, criticizing the lack of serious penalties for drivers with suspended licenses."

The TA statement is a bit misleading. Gothamist got it right by noting that his license was suspended for nonpayment of car insurance. You are the same safe or unsafe driver whether you pay for insurance or not. Had Aponte paid his bill and had a valid license this tragedy would have happened still.

I see the distinction:

Its the difference between murdering someone with a registered gun vs. murdering someone with an unregistered gun.

I'm sure that means a whole lot of to the victim and the grieving family.
