Say Bye Bye to WiFi in City Parks (For Now)

0109wififail.jpg Seems like just yesterday that the Parks Department was compiling a map of all the free WiFi spots in the city parks—but now CityRoom is reporting that "the long-troubled arrangement to install wireless Internet networks in Central Park and other New York City parks has quietly collapsed after the contractor, Wi-Fi Salon, ran out of money." The company has been removing equipment from Central Park, Prospect Park, Washington Square, Battery, Riverside, Van Cortlandt, Pelham Bay, and Flushing Meadows-Corona Parks, annnd Orchard Beach. However, since Bryant Park's WiFi is provided privately, you'll still be able to log on there. The Parks Department confirmed the termination, but also that they will "soon unveil a series of digital inclusion initiatives focused on expanding access to, and adoption of, broadband technology, including service in parks across the city."

Good, get someone new in there. The wifi at washington square park was up maybe 20% of the time since they installed it.

NYU should setup open wifi for the park, they can easily cover the entire park by putting some antennas on their buildings which are all around the park.

The cost to setup and keep providing free wifi in such a large and popular place like Washington Square Park is staggering. If anyone can come up with a plan that can pay for itself, let us know.

It is actually not staggering, their issue sounds like they couldn't figure out a business model to support it, thus failed.

Well, maybe wifi in central park would be decently high in cost, but not washington square; you could cover the entire park with 2-3 access points if done right.

Ummm...are we living in a "developing nation"?

wtf? I finally gets me a 3 pound wireless N notebook that's 9 inches and has 7 hours of battery life so I can go all free wifi in parks all day and this shit happens? Goddamn You George Bush!

How about going to the park to play ball, frisbee or take a walk? No wonder there are so many flabby people in this town.

It seems we've confused computers with some sort of life support system we can't be without for more than five seconds.

WiFi is great for the home but do we really need it everywhere. We are getting to the point of people not being able to walk away from internet access for a second. Always need to be able to access the net.

I think a lot of people would love if there was more Wifi coverage in NYC so one could say for example use an IPOD touch reliably instead of having to have an Iphone with edge or 3G
