Moving Away from the Sun

You may not have noticed, but the Earth was at perihelion yesterday. Today, we're a bit further from the sun. The warm weather won't last much longer as a cold front is crossing the region this afternoon. The front should thin out the clouds, perhaps letting the receding sun to shine for a bit. More importantly the temperature will start to drop. Before the front arrives we should see an unseasonably warm high in the upper 40s.

Much cooler tomorrow with the high expected to be in the upper 30s, which is about normal for early January. The weather tomorrow night through Wednesday morning is looking unsettled. There's a potent storm a brewin' over Texas today. It should strengthen as it moves east to the Carolinas and then up the coast. The temperature gradient across the storm is quite steep which means the storm will pack a punch and that the line between snow, rain and freezing rain will be difficult to pinpoint.

As of now the most likely scenario is that the city will get a rain/snow mix Tuesday night, switching over to all rain by Wednesday. Just north of the city, where the ground is much colder, that rain is likely to freeze. Thursday and Friday should be cool, highs only in the mid 30s if we're lucky, but calm.

It's a bit disingenuous to mention the passing perihelion in the same post as a cold weather prediction. In reality, changes in our distance from the sun have only an infinitesimal impact on climate and weather. You could have said something like, "despite being at the closest point to the sun yesterday, it was still cold."

I did notice actually. It seemed like it was perpetual dusk/dawn all afternoon.
