Parks Department Wants You To Design a Parks Mascot

2009_01_squirrel.jpg For some reason, this amazing contest from the Parks & Recreation Department escaped our attention until now! Parks officials want you to think of a mascot! This adorable (and nutty) image of a squirrel unzipping his fur (ew) to reveal a Parks logo is included, but don't let that stymie your imagination: "Is it Nutty the Squirrel, Hudson the Hawk, or Parker the Leaf? Is it another animal, person, or object, or a previously unknown creature that emerged from the depths of New York City’s 29,000 acres of parks, gardens, and forests?" Person? That means you could potentially suggest former Parks Commissioner Robert Moses! Still, keep this in mind: "Designs must be able to be produced into a costume that can be worn by an adult between 5’6” and 6’ in height and up to 180 pounds in weight. There may be some creative adjustments to your original design due to accommodations made for the human body." More details here.

It would be dishonest for the parks department

to use an image of the squirrel as they prohibit

we citizens from feeding them "This encourages Rats"

well they are long tailed rats, ain't they?

Shame on the Parks department, I would love to get

arrested for feeding a squirrel, I could use the publicity.

We need some of those dogs of hi breeding that

run in Madison square park to have some input on

    this.

I have heard of one person leaving there dog

in the"James" dog run when they go to work in the Morning

then at the end of the day they pick up their dog.

He says this is the best free dog care service in the city, nobody seems to know that his dog is with no one, till the owner returns.

I guess some one must pick up the poop?

Do any of you think that the squirrel looks like a flasher? Like, say, one of those flashers one might see in a public park?

How about the miserable underfed carriage horses hauling fat tourists? or how about the racoons that the park dept drowns?

  • ugh

My design pick is "guy masturbating in bushes"

The duck with no pants on is half way there.

Or maybe the guy with the creepy mustache and the leaves in his hair....he definately has the disheleved look of a public mastrubater pleasuring himself in a pile of leaves.

When Henry Stern was Parks Commissioner, I think he was the mascot for the Parks Department.

As in, a giant head attached to stumpy body, waddles around, and makes indecipherable, chirping sound.

How about Zippy, a furry little PEP Officer who writes the fastest ticket in NYC?

  • Hey! It's cheaper than hiring a design firm to come up with four choices that people vote on.
