German Wants to Trademark "Freedom Tower" Condoms

010208condom.jpg A German entrepreneur is applying for a federal trademark to use the Freedom Tower to market a line of condoms; the proposed slogan would be "Freedom Tower: Make Love Not War." What, was "Grind Zero" taken? The Post says 9/11 families are "howling" over the proposed rubber, though they only get a quote from Jack Lynch, whose firefighter son died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001: "I find it very offensive. The idea that anyone would use something associated with 9/11 to promote any product is upsetting. But to promote condoms, that goes a step beyond." According to the article, the Port Authority, which owns the tower, is "scrambling to block" the application. If he does get the patent, the entrepreneurial German better hope his prophylactic resembles the Freedom Tower in name only, because so far nobody's been able to get that building up. Hey-oh!

The federal government should take over the Ground Zero reconstruction, and all responsible parties now involved with the fiasco should be prosecuted (on trumped-up charges if necessary). The most important construction job in world history, and it's a total clusterf***.

It seems like the last thing you would want to "go free" is the contents of the "Freedom Tower," no?

Hey baby, how'd you like to make it to the bottom floor of my Freedom Tower?

You can't get a patent on a trademark.

Yes, bad taste. But for a German ... at least he's not trying to trademark and sell a brand of Twin Towers Double Stuffer condoms.

The sense of entitlement some of these "9/11 families" have is staggering.

Turn everything within Fulton, West, Liberty and Greenwich Streets into a park and sell the rest. End of story.

Peter-- "The most important construction job in world history..." In world history?? Really???? Gimme a break!

I can just see the marketing campaign:

Freedom Tower Condoms:

For those special nights when you think you might get it up in eight or ten years!

For "9-11 inches" (sorry, I couldn't help myself!)

Doesn't Giuliani own the trademark on "9-11"?

safe sex sux. we should allocate a section of the freedom tower to std research and anti-abstinence evangelism.

I'm sure the 9/11 families will use their business entity veto for any company wanting to occupy floors in the new WTC building for something like that.

It's in poor taste, but so what? A lot of stuff in the world is in poor taste.

Figures, what more should we expect from a German? What's next Holocaust toaster Ovens??

I find your comment as offensive as what this particular German is doing. Don't stereotype all Germans, the majority of which were born after the war or who were just children during that time, like my mother who was just seven when the war ended. Actually today, if you're Jewish, you're more likely to be a victim of antisemitism in this country or a country like France than you would be in Germany. The average German child knows more about the Holocaust than the average American adult. Try to keep your hatred in check, you'll live a better life if you do.

Can we be offended that the idea is stupid and not necessarily about the subject matter?

Dirk said poor taste. heh

In poor taste? Then they should make these flavored condoms!
