Videos: Hello, 2009

Happy New Year, everyone! We'll have some more coverage of New Year's Eve/New Year's Day in Times Square—where it was about 0 degrees, counting wind chill— later, but here are some videos various people already put online of the festivities.

First, there's Mayor Bloomberg, former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton (with, it looks like, Bloomberg's daughter Emma and his companion Diana Taylor) pressing the button for the New Year's Ball:

Then there's Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve, with Ryan Seacrest, the Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, Lionel Ritchie and Kelly Pickler:

Finally, here's Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper on CNN, getting a report and the bird from New Orleans [via reader Jon—many thanks]:

Same as the last few years, listening to Dick Clark was painful, and we only watched the last five minutes before midnight. The man just doesn't know when to leave gracefully. If he keeps this up, within the next five years, there will be college students who will have no memories of Dick Clark except as a doddering old man. Nice image to leave of yourself. It's especially embarrassing in the last seconds when his countdown doesn't match the clock.

In fact, New Year's Rockin' Eve should be put out of its misery completely. It has fallen pretty far from its peak back in the 1970s and 80s. Then again, there seems to be a youth fixation with all of the NYE shows. I would think young people would be out partying rather than watching TV. Older people would be more likely to stay in, but there's nothing worth watching.

Dick Clark needs a sidekick for these shows. I nominate Ariel Sharon.

Watching the ball drop with my family was especially comfortable from the warmth of our home. All those people on TV look so cold!

    NEW YEAR'S IRRESOLUTION

Mark Twain as usual said it best

And it still applies in all climes:

    "Stopping smoking's an easy thing--

I''ve done it dozens of times."
