2008 was a bittersweet year for New York sports. Early in the year, it saw the Giants make an incredible run in the playoffs, all the way to winning the Super Bowl in one of the NFL's biggest upsets. But 2008 also saw the final days of two stadiums, one more beloved than another, the rebuilding of the Knicks and Nets, playoff misses for both local baseball teams, the welcoming of a NFL great and several other compelling stories.
Red Bulls Make a Run for MLS Cup They are an afterthought in the New York area, but the Red Bulls are the only team, other than the Giants to reach their league championship in 2008. And, like the Giants, it was a very surprising run. After blowing the chance to qualify for the playoffs with a win, the Red Bulls got the help they needed to make the playoffs when the Columbus Crew defeated D.C. United on the last day of the season. A victory over two-time defending champion Houston sent them to the Western Conference Finals and a victory their over Real Salt Lake put them in the championship. Though they fell short, 3-1 to Columbus, the Red Bulls had their most successful season and left their fans looking forward to 2009. - Peter Trinkle (AP)

Best Giants victory ever. Therefore, best year in NY sports ever.
2008 is tied with 1994 as best NY sports year ever.
1986 was pretty good too. The Giants went 17-2 and won the Superbowl, and the Mets had their great season.
But the win over New England was better, which is why 2008 was "THE BEST NEW YORK SPORTS SEASON EVER."
At least for me.
