Fare Fear, November 20: With record ridership and a growing budget deficit, the MTA announced that its 2009 budget would include severe service cuts and fare hikes. A state panel suggested tolls and taxes to help shore up MTA finances as talks of a $3 subway/bus fare and $100 monthly Metrocard grew. Outrage over the budget provoked a near shoe-ing.
