Yesterday, the Jets' firing of coach Eric Mangini brought some satisfaction to fans and sports writers. But owner Woody Johnson's and general manager's apparent inclination to keep aging quarterback Brett Favre has some scratching their heads. The Post's Steve Serby writes:
If Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum are really serious about staying with Favre and a right arm that needed an MRI yesterday, a scattershot right arm that will be 40 years old in October, then they aren't moving forward. They are being held hostage to a pipe dream that our favorite Hall of Fame icon can go Pack to the future and remain forever young, and they are holding their next head coach hostage to that pipe dream as well while Favre holds them all hostage with his Shakespearian lament, To Play Or Not to Play? Some players agree: Kerry Rhodes said, "If he's dedicated and he wants to come back and do this and do it the right way and come here and be here when we're here in training camp and the minicamps and working out with us and doing all those things, then I'm fine with it. But don't come back if it's going to be halfhearted or he doesn't want to put the time in with us."
The Daily News' Rick Cimini suggests that Mangini's fall began as soon as Favre was traded to the Jets ("Although he publicly supported the acquisition of the future Hall of Fame quarterback, Mangini wasn't the driving force behind the acquisition, according to two people familiar with the team's thinking"). However, other factors doomed the former Mangenius: His apparent lack of emotion, he was too hands-on, not enough adjustments from week to week.
Right now, Newsday's Bob Glauber, who also wants Favre to decide on his future ASAP, forecasts chances for potential Jets coach picks. Glauber gives the Bill Cowher 3-1 odds, but adds that the Steelers' former coach "might not want the pressure of coaching in New York."

Newsday wins this battle of the cover art. Brilliant. I've begun using the term 'Mangenius' to denote anyone who isn't a genius. And, as my dad pointed out to me, Mangini named his son Bret, which really does make him a Mangenius. I agree with K. Rhodes, though, and if Favre is going to put everything he's got into the next season, then I'm for it. That said, I just cringe at the thought of another tear-jerking press conference from Favre.
And Cowher is probably too smart to stake his destiny on Favre.
And J. Chung wins the battle of the newsblog headlines with the inclusion of 'Manboob'.
Favre threw so many WTF!? interceptions in the last four weeks that I'm surprised he wasn't betting against his own team ala Pete Rose.
It's the whole 'throwing off his back-foot' thing, as far as I saw it. I'll agree with Mangini's comments during the season that Favre was throwing the ball when he should have been just taking the sack, but Brett's got to stop throwing off his back-foot.
But that's what Brett does, right? Never gives up? Always thinks he can make the play. I think he just needs to realize, like a lot of older athletes, that they don't have the same skill level as they did before. If he realizes that, and plays at his current talent level, then I think he can still be successful.
mmmm boobs.......
The Jets suck-they will always suck. Ken O'brien, Browning Nagle, Boomer Esiason, Blair Thomas, Joe Walton, Bruce Coslet, Rich Kotite, Al Groh, Johnny Lame Jones, Kyle Brady, Rick Mirer, Bubby Brister...
So they went 9-7. If they had good play calling and better execution, they would be in the playoffs. Typical Jet season. They should have just been 4-12.
You forgot Richard Todd!
I try to forget Todd. However, I will never forget a banner I once saw. It read, "Todd is God"...
