Does Mayor Mike Think He's Our Knight in Shining Armor?

If the debate over extending term limits didn't make the point clear enough, Mayor Bloomberg wants us as New Yorkers to look at ourselves in the mirror during this time of crisis and ask ourselves, "Can we as a city survive without him?"

Yesterday, the mayor certainly did not mince words on the state of the city economy while discussing how he feels federal stimulus money should come directly to the city and not be left in the hands of a state government that "keeps ratcheting up expenses." He then emphasized how bad things are by saying, "I can tell you: the reckoning is coming for our city. We are going to have a smaller workforce and fewer services and...that is a situation that is going to be exacerbated as this economy slows down and is not going to be removed."

Then today at a press conference with the Israeli Consulate General Asaf Shariv, the mayor turned a question about Israel's "disproportionate response" to Hamas missile attacks into an angry retort about how he would respond if we were attacked. "If you're attacked in this city, my instructions to Ray Kelly is to use everything we have at our command to protect you and your family. There's no such thing as a measured response to terrorism."

There are only a little over ten months until Election Day. Video clips of the Bloomberg press conferences after the jump...

Disproportionate my ass. It's long past time Israel crushed those Hamas cowards and murderers. If innocent civilians get killed it's because the Palestinian weasels keep hiding behind their own women and children hoping they'll get killed so they can play the martyr even though they're the ones deliberately targetting Israeli civilians with their rockets and suicide bombers.

I think Bloomberg's comparison is a little lopsided. If we were forcing 2 million people to live on Staten Island, and actively intercepted food and supplies to the island, wouldn't you expect them to be pretty pissed off?

I'm not taking a side here, I just think it's unseemly of the monarchical Mayor Mike to bring international politics any closer to home than they need to be. We know he supports Israel, as do many New Yorkers. And many of us also feel sickened by Israel's actions at this time. It's complicated, and I don't think it belongs in City Hall.

Anti-semites tend to feel sickened when Jews actually defend themselves against those who want to wipe them out. (it's stated in both the Hamas and PLO charters) You must miss the good old days when they meekly walked into gas chambers without a fight.

I think its really a shame how there are no Arab people with enough money to take in these poor Palestinians.

If only there was someone in some less poor country who might like to help out like Saudi Arabia, Dubai, UAE (Abu Dhabi), Kuwait, Algeria, Syria, Oman, Libya, Qatar, Iran, Bahrain, Yemen, Lebanon, Tunisia, Jordan.......

So all I can assume is that these richer Arab states are setting up the Gaza Arabs like fourth graders get the second graders to fight each other.

Except this time it's the second graders against the Hells Angels.

True. But don't forget Israel is not fighting Palestinians, but Hamas. These are the assholes who forcibly took control of the Gaza strip in 2007 from the legitimate authorities. If you don't remember, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Gaza_(2007).

actually the palestinians in gaza elected hamas in 2007. they elect these scum bags then act shocked when israel retaliates to the constant barrage of rockets that have been fired over the border. even the government of egypt led by hosni mubarek want absolutely nothing to do with these war mongers. the west bank is largely peaceful because the war mongering group hamas is not in charge.

Bloomberg said no form of response to terrorism was disproportionate. Therefore, for him and you who agree with him it would be all right to commit genocide -- to kill everyone in Gaza, let us say. That is what he said, and what you agree with. The day may come when you all wish you hadn't said it -- but there it is.

incredible all the photo opts - thats the 2nd one I saw, that are being done with the remains of the missles that Hamas is using against the advanced US funded weapons of the israelis. 2 israelis have been killed compared to 400 or so Palestenians......and never a critical a word against israel from the US......we, americans, are not the good guys. You can buy the propaganda now but history won't be on our side.

>> 2 israelis have been killed compared to 400 or so Palestenians......and never a critical a word against israel from the US

Start a war, get your ass kicked and you want what? Sympathy?

Most of the people being killed, maimed, terrorized and imprisoned have nothing to do with the rocket attacks. All the propaganda in the world isn't going to change that.

that is sad. what is even more disturbing is that the scum that fire the rockets into israel turn around and hide behind the innocent women and children.

What exactly do these fools envision as a proportionate response?

Most of the people being killed, maimed, terrorized and imprisoned have nothing to do with the rocket attacks. All the propaganda in the world isn't going to change that.

oh noes! human shields, how dare they!
how dare they! human shields, shields, they're everywhere!
